I've been to some of the best sushi restaurants in the country - Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Las Vegas, Hawaii - and none of them compare to Kyala. The service is excellent and everything I've ever ordered here is fresh and top quality. The cuts are generous, and Yoshi, the head sushi chef, treats each dish like a piece of art. My personal favorites are the spicy scallop hand roll, the caterpillar roll, the fried rainbow roll, and the sashimi (the sashimi plate is my favorite entree). They remodeled about a year ago, and the place looks great. Whether I dine in or order take-out, the experience is always superb and the service is quick and friendly. If you sit at the bar, Yoshi usually gives you a little something extra to start with as well as dessert at the end. SIDE NOTE: They DO NOT give out free rolls as some have suggested. It's just a little bite, like a couple pieces of salmon or tuna - a small appetizer, really. I doubt they'd stay in business if they gave away free food all the time. Also, I think they're more likely to do this for customers like myself who've been going there for 10+ years, not first-timers. I've noticed other reviewers have complained about the prices, but I really think that, given the quality and quantity of the food at Kyala, the prices aren't any more or less than other sushi restaurants. If you want to get a combo meal, lunch is a better deal than dinner - you get almost the same thing and it's five dollars less. Seriously, though - if you're looking for cheapness and quantity, go to a sushi buffet. Kyala is for people who know good sushi when they taste it.

This place looks creepy outside because of its tinted window. I came here to try this restaurant out. I didn't expect much because of its cold service. However, the food surprised us! I ordered sashimi dinner and my friend ordered a two-item dinner. My sashimi dinner has salmon, tuna, white fish, albacore, hamachi, octopus and red snapper. Each kind of fish has 3 pieces. The sushi chef is so generous! Each piece is thick and chewy. I like my friend's tonkasu as well. It is well fried and the meat juice remains inside!

I decided to check this place out with some coworkers during lunch.. We came to an agreement that their lunch menu is a pricier than most places for sushi. Second, I didn't like how my sushi pieces had wasabi on it already .. Third, service was a lil slow.. Overall it got 3 stars for the freshness.. No big rush to come back at here

It is always the places I love most that I wait to review. Needless to say, this is a gem that I am grateful resides in lil ol' Diamond Bar. I am not going to pretend that I am a Sushi connoisseur, but I certainly know when I am being served old, chewy fish. That has never happened at Kayala-- always fresh, easy to bite through "melt in your mouth" quality. My family and I have been coming here since they opened, and have never been disappointed with the service or quality. I love their vegetable udon-- generous amounts of vegetables and pretty cheap too. Anyway, if you are ever in the area, I would highly recommend this place.

over priced and not fresh not much selection either ..really?????????? ugh seriously don't waste your money or time. I was very disappointed. I would like to say I am a sushi connoisseur ex husband was a fisher and have had much better sushi in the San Fernando valley at a place called Midori but around here I can say Oishi in placentia is the best bank for your buck its AYCE. or go to Ginza best sushi! but no AYCE

Great Food.. Came for lunch on Good Friday, and service was quick. Got my food in less than 10 minutes.. Great Beef Teriyaki, Sashimi was fresh as well.

I came here with a friend for dinner, and although it was pricey for me, I would say prices are fair for what you get. The fish is definitely fresh and the sushi chefs are constantly in action, since there was such a huge crowd here. I feel like all the tables were taken, which says a lot, especially when you're in Diamond Bar. Although the sushi tasted like al the other sushi I've eaten before, it's in a plaza where parking is a breeze, which really makes the experience all the better. The service was good too; the waitress kept on checking on us to see whether we were doing good or not. Would come back! Recommend. . . especially for an establishment in Diamond Bar.

Been coming here for probably almost a decade. Very typical but quality restaurant. The owners are very friendly. If you sit by the bar, you get a small free appetizer and a piece of fruit for dessert. Offer suggestions about what you like to the sushi chefs at the bar and they'll whip you up something new and tasty!

Came here for lunch. Ordered a sushi deluxe ($16) and a California roll ($6). Portions are very generous, the amount of fish given on each piece of nigiri were substantial. The amount of tuna in the tuna rolls were also surprisingly generous. Only complaint is the service, as the wait staff seemed to be set up to be like a free-for-all. Was asked 3 times if I wanted something to drink, and had to explain that another waitress has already taken my drink order. Afterwards, not a single waitress came by to check on how I was doing or to refill my beverage.

food was yummy and fresh!! got two raw oysters for $5.50. loved it!!!. I ordered the white fish miso glaze/sashimi combo- it was okay. sashimi was fresh, but slices were thin. came with rice, miso soup and side salad. the baked broccoli and potato that came as well was different. thick, and not much flavor to it. my husband got teriyaki chicken/sashimi combo, he liked it. rainbow roll was yummy!! it was a bit pricey for smaller portion size, $15 for main, $13 for rolls!

I was a bit disappointed by my visit yesterday, but Kyala is still one of my favorite sushi restaurants in Diamond Bar. Food: I ordered the combination lunch- Tonkatsu and Sashimi and my girlfriend had Salmon Teriyaki and Sashimi. The sashimi was fresh as usual, which was great, but my tonkatsu was a bit dry. The salmon teriyaki was also a nice part of our lunch. Service: Our waitress didn't seem too friendly with us, but it was probably because we came in right before they closed. Regardless, she should still be friendly, right? Overall: It was a nice experience for us, also because it was my girlfriend's first time here. We usually get 10% off our bill since my brother-in-law is friends with the lady owner!

Fabulous! I got the shrimp and veggie tempura. It reminded me of the days I lived in Japan.

A very average experience. Was craving a chirashi bowl for the longest time and ended up coming here with friends. I'll just talk about the service and that chirashi bowl. Service: We were seated right away and they put together tables for us. Which was nice but I had to flag a waitress down for somebody to take our order. And later I had to flag down another waitress to get a drink. It dawned on me that no table has the same server rather anyone who happens to walk by your table will help you if you ASK them. Nobody refilled a cup of water for anyone at our table nor did they ask us for refills of our beer. The only thing they hounded us for was the check. There was somebody staring at us to see whether we paid or not. Not crazy about that. Chirashi: For 20 bucks you would really hope for a bowl of fresh fish and good sushi rice. We got neither. The fish had a dull color to it, which tells you that it was originally frozen before served. Good quality fish has that vibrant color. The amount of actual fish on the bowl was pretty depressing as well. There might have been 10 pieces of fish at the most. For 20 bucks you'd hope to get a lot more. The rice that was beneath the entree was plain white rice. So as you're eating the two together there is no balance of flavor, rather there is a enormous lack of it. In all, the service and the food at Kyala left A LOT to be desired. I will never go there again.

Some of the best sushi I've ever had. Always extremely fresh and definitely worth the price. Really authentic and very good quality. I've been coming here for years and it has never failed to impress me. Especially love how Yoshi takes so much care in his work by always remembering his customers and making them feel special.

One o the more traditional sushi joints in db...rolls arent too heavily emphasized... I remember the sashimi bein very fresh...i also like all their tempura stuff...jalapeno tempura...friend rainbow roll n such... I think the thing that stood out to me the most was the crunch roll...sum places can have it a lil stale...this one was like the perfect combination o flakiness, crunch, n texture!

Great combos for decent prices. My coworker and I came here on a Friday for lunch, and oh my, let me tell you -- it was packed...but for good reason! Food: A menu is available online for you to scope out before coming in. They have "traditional" lunches which include your standard teriyaki chicken to tempuras served with salad, soup, and rice and combo lunches are self explanatory - combinations of two with either meats, tempuras, rolls, and sashimi. The menu also includes other items such as donburi, udon, salads, and sushi. Everything ranges from $8-$15. I had the 1/2 tempura udon & chicken terriyaki don for $8.75. Both were simply delicious! Absolutely no complaints as everything was cooked perfectly, served hot, and flavored right. The portions were a little on the smaller side though, so I was still a little hungry after my meal. But that's when desserts come in! They have ice cream and mochi ice cream for $2 and $1.20, respectively. Service: RUSHED! Our waitress talked soooo incredibly fast that there was a lag time in between me listening to what she said and me responding 3 seconds later because it took me a while to process all that was coming out of her mouth. It wasn't that she wasn't friendly because she was, but it was a full house and she was understandably trying to get to as many tables as she had to. In one fell swoop, she took our drink order and food order. She disappeared and then magically appeared with our food minutes later. Major points for being efficient as it is a lunch crowd, and there are plenty of employees around hoping to get a quick fix before returning to the office. Atmosphere: The restaurant is rather small. Nothing special about the decor. Tables on one side of the wall almost had to share breathing air as I was unintentionally listening to the entire conversation from the next table over, but hey, we were only a party of two so we weren't going to be given a table in the middle where space wasn't as limited. The sushi chefs seemed personable; I saw a few chatting with customers. Definite regular spot if I'm in need of a sushi fix. Parking is easy, and what's best is that it's in the middle of a bunch of banks (I can deposit my check AND grab some sushi all in one trip).

Came here on a Friday night at around 630. Inside was packed but they quickly found a spot for us. Tried their specials of the day which had various items including pork katsu, salmon and tuna sashimi, teriyaki chicken and baked salmon. Yes, it did take a while for everything to arrive but judging by the size of the place and the number of people there I didn't mind too much. You can really tell they pick the freshest ingredients for their dishes. Portions are pretty small for the price, but maybe that is because we are so accustomed to overindulging ourselves with food. This place is a lot better than most Japanese restaurants around town.

Went here after reading the reviews and I don't know if that was a good thing. I was expecting good food, but that wasn't the case. The sashimi salad was good. The Okayo Don was missing something, as was the spider roll and dragon roll. Just wasn't flavorful enough. It was average at best. The staff was friendly and kind but it wasn't enough to overcome their OK food.

I just ate at a sushi restaurant that my family and I have been coming for years. Never had their lunch menu so decided to try it with my mom. What I ordered was $9.00 salad +sushi combo. It says sushi: 4pcs of sushi & 4pcs of California roll or spicy tuna roll. At the bottom it says $1.50 to change your spicy tuna roll to 8pcs. I ordered the salad + sushi combo plus wanted to add 1.50 to change it to 8pcs of spicy tuna roll because I was hungry. When I got my meal I received a plate of salad and 8 pcs of spicy tuna roll. I asked the young server who looks inexperience and asked isn't it suppose to come with sushi? He said no it's either my roll or sushi. And then he left. I started getting curious because I swore I read the menu and it says sushi and roll for their "sushi" term. And their photograph of the set was sushi and roll with a salad. So I checked with the menu and made sure I was right and called over another waiter. Apparently he didn't speak English and didn't understand me so he flagged down the same incompetent server. He told me yes the set comes with sushi and a roll but when I changed it to 8 spicy Tuna roll I don't get sushi. That's fine by me then why are you still charging me an additional $1.50 to replace something I should have gotten? I could have simply said I don't want sushi and only want to replace it with rolls. And rolls are cheaper that sushi. So his argument was well that's how our pricing is. He did not resolve the matter or even know how. I was furious since it's the principle of your restaurant and the customer service. I don't care about that $1.50 but it's ridiculous to know they you are cheaping out customers in misleading pricing and incompetent servers who lack customer service skills. If you have no skills in customer service please do us a favor and just quit. I still paid for $1.50 because the server just did not know how to react to the situation and he was just wasting my time. I just made sure I gave him a tip minus the $1.50 he charged me. So I guess you earned $1.50 less tip. Like·Comment·Share

Service was non- existed. It was Chinese style sushi and chef did a sloppy job on the sushi. Sushi tasted like it was previously frozen. This sushi at Pavillion Market is much better!!. Cannot and will not give a recommendation to eat here !.

No food (only salad) coming after 1hr waiting in regular lunch time. The only reason they said is they are making to go order first. Totally unprofessional. Let all the people dinning in the restaurant WAIT and WAIT. This is regular lunch time. We paid and leave this bad restaurant without eating. Again, really bad service and no any note during the waiting.

3 for ok. I had a fish noodle soup that lacked flavor. Hubs had standard spicy tuna roll that was a bit mushy and was spiced with siracha. We shared a rainbow roll: fish wasn't fresh overall. Value was okay. Tasted much better. Won't be back.

"This tastes like prison food. Have you ever been to prison? It's looks like food but doesn't taste like it." Ordered lunch combination ($10) salmon shio and (+$1) beef teriyaki, hold the teriyaki and a spicy tuna roll($8). The food is there but it's missing key elements. First of all presentation in Japanese cooking is very important. Sure they used nice white wide plates but the placement and color echo-ed TV dinner. Yes the beef is a tender filet but without the teriyaki sauce it's not seasoned well. The ponzu was missing depth of flavor. The spicy tuna was fresh, but overworked to the point of gummyness, and it was under seasoned. Salad was oily. Miso soup was thin. Rice was overworked and clumped together. I wonder if this restaurant has been opened for too long, once a quality restaurant but without much competition in the area has lowered it's standards, pushing food out to the masses for people who happily will accept it as "good japanese". For the best Japanese food in the area go to Sushi Koshu in Walnut. Price point is exactly the same but you get twice as much food and the quality is leaps and bounds beyond Sushi Kyala.

I'm sorry maybe it was just the time I came in but this is by far the WORST sushi I have ever had and I had to order a side of rice just to clear my taste buds... The edamame is ok but some of the soybeans were already popping out almost as if they were handling them too rough.. My friends terriyaki beef was 10$... Just the BEEF... Had to order a side of rice which is super tiny anyways. Not to mention her beef was UNDERCOOKED... There are a lot of regulars and it shocks me... I've never had such bad fish in my life it tasted disgusting and fishy ... The fat of the fish just sat on my tongue really badly. Thank god for wasabi and soy sauce because I needed to get the taste out of my mouth!!! Philadelphia roll was ok but I'm never comin back here sorry.

Great sushi spot. Very hidden and tucked away. Once you walk in its pretty cozy and just a nice setting. There is the bar seats as well as table seats with booth seating against the walls. Ordered the combo dinner meal for around 16 bucks. Got to choose two items so I chose chicken terriyaki and california roll. The california roll was great. Just your basic cali roll can't really complain. The teriyaki was a little different that Ive had before. The teriyaki sauce was something else and very gooey. Kinda weird tbh. The miso soup was great and the salad with the miso dressing was great also. The teriyaki came with this small side of rice and this like baked broccoli which was interesting. Wasn't that great not really into baked mayo dishes. I also tried some philly roll which was whatever. Its a philly roll so what can you expect. Overall I had a good experience and the staff was great and very friendly.

Lived in the area for over ten years and havent tried this place til now. There seems to be regulars there but a handful of them at the sushi bar were loud and obnoxious. Food: Sashimi plate- the fish was pretty fresh but the selection was lacking and there are definitely some better places out there. Oyakodon- the eggs werent soft and seemed a bit dry. was way too pricey for what it was IMO. Service: - our server was very nice and friendly. She came by often and was more than willing to help us when we needed her. - I wish the people at the bar werent so loud. It was just really annoying cause they obviously had more than a few drinks. Overall: The fish was fresh enough for me and the selection couldve been better. The service was still great and that always makes any experience better. It wouldve been nice to eat without so much noise and yelling behind us. THREE STARS: loud. fresh enough. friendly.

One of the best sushi places I've been to in a while. My friend and I ordered from the bar, and they just kept bringing us out plates and plates of food. I didn't pay for the meal because it was for my birthday, but I think it was around $80 for the both of us. Plenty of rolls and sashimi plates, as well as little bits and pieces of fried salmon that was to DIE for. They also brought out some miso soup towards the end. Bottomline: the chefs were nice, and it was pretty packed for a Wednesday evening. Great place.

Got dinged one star cause it was a bit expensive for me. But the service was good very friendly. Ive been here several times with recommendation from several friends and it was amazing. Their food quality was good and fresh. I always get the udon and a cut roll when I go but ive tried my friends dishes and they are also good. I would recommend this place for a good japanese sushi place. I say this because most customers dont know that some sushi places are korean owned. This place is japanese owned and im proud that it ia because they are the best I have had so far.

Great experience. The staff was friendly, prices are fair, you get a lot of food for the money, and they have a pretty solid happy hour. Most importantly, the food is prepared well. Make sure to check the specials on the sign! You get a pretty decent variety of stuff. We will be back at some point.

I was looking for a good Japanese place to eat at when I was not impressed with Niko Niko. This place has good reviews and it was crowded so it was a good sign. I got the two item combo for $10 which is the average price for this area. The food tasted great and this is a family owned establishment!

I really wanted to like this place, I did. It's close to my parent's home, and there were lots of good reviews. Came around dinner and there were a few other people there. Friendly service and food came out on a timely manner. Other than that, the food wasn't anything to be excited about. Actually it wasn't memorable. If anything, the food was alright. No fishy smell, and the texture of fish was firm.

It was ok. Not bad but definitely not stellar. Ordered udon, tuna and yellowtail sashimi, and toro sashimi. Oh, and a tofu salad and Cali rolls. Udon: It was good... Like all normal udons go. Yellowtail sashimi: Good, crisp, fresh. Tuna: Yikes, not the best. Not too fresh, a but floppy and chewy. Toro: Not impressed - should have gone to Kamon in Rowland Heights instead. Cali rolls: Good! Tofu salad: not worth the $6.50 Not a bad place to go to but not sure I would go again.

Went with a large group, so we called in our order and reserved a long table. I had a salmon teriyaki. Did not wow me at all. The place is not very big, it is surprisingly crowded at lunch, price is average--was not impressed. Surprised at all the 5 Star reviews for this place -- makes me think I ordered wrong! I'd be willing to go back to try their sushi, but they get 3 stars for now as the servers were horrible at getting the advanced order to our table and they confused the dishes more than twice!

This place is close to my house. So I had to try it especially since I was craving Japanese food. This place isn't a sushi bar kind of place. They have good set meals - chicken teriyaki, katsu, etc. I ordered the pork katsu meal. SERVICE: Standard. They filled my drink when I asked but they were kind of slow (and there weren't many people) - it could had been because I went when they were closing. :P But they were standard. LOCATION: Plenty of parking. Good location near grocery store. FOOD: I felt like for the price... it wasn't worth it. It was regular katsu. My friend had a better meal... maybe I'll try it again but order what he got. I have a photo of my It's good if you live in DB and REALLY hungry.

4.5 stars, we've been here at least 10 times! Food: 1) Sashimi: all types are always reliable, always fresh, always delicious. Usually we focus on sashimi, then order other items to supplement. 2) Udon: solid noodles, not the best udon ever 3) Steamed Clams: tasty, not too sea-y, buttery and rich, but still light 4) Sashimi Salad: fresh and generous fish, though I've now found that sashimi salads tend to hide the flavor of the fish itself, but good salad Ambiance: They've redecorated their interior many times over the past few years. Always cute, clean, and well-decorated. Service is average, sometimes have to wave your arms to get their attention. Ample parking. Bottom Line: Our favorite sushi joint in this area, for sure!

Came here last week during lunch hour. Despite being lunch hour & they were busy, my friend & I were able to get seated right away. As soon as we were seated, I was expecting to be ignored as previously mentioned, they were really busy but, I was wrong! We were greeted by the waitress right away! Food came out fairly quickly & def. hit the spot! Will come here again, I just hope I don't get seated next to a guy who kept staring at his food and burping throughout his meal! Creepy & gross!

Came here around 11:45AM on a Tuesday and wasn't too crowded. Ordered a 1/2 tempura udon bowl with 4 spicy tuna rolls and 4 california rolls option (add a dollar). I actually thought this option came with sushi, but I was wrong (it was in place of the sushi) The tempura was delectably fried and didn't have that batter taste. The shrimp was fresh. The udon was good although I think they should give you a full bowl for the $9.75. I'm going to have to come here again and try the chirashi bowl.

This is a cute little sushi place that the kids and adults all seem to like. I am thankful that it's close to our house. I can't remember what it was that we ordered, the usual sashimi, rolls and chicken teriyaki bento box for the 8 year old I suppose but everyone devoured their food. I like that they are good at both sashimi and the non-sushi items, like tempura and teriyaki.

The last time I was here was about 2-3 years ago, I always remembered the food was nothing impressive nor super fresh. Came back today, they've remodeled. Taste wise, I still agree with myself 3 years ago. (Good job, T, good job) I always base a place's freshness on their uni (not solely on it of course). Only have sushi uni, no sashimi. It was about $8 for two small piece. Not horrible, but I won't order it here again either. Chriashi bowl, surprisingly a good variety of sashimi on there. $19 for the bowl, filled me up. Decent price for the portion. Freshness. Not bad. I'd give it a 7 out of 10. Sashimi dinner plate, about the same selections as the chirashi. Without the unagi and tamago. Also 7/10. Rainbow row- average rainbow row, but decent freshness of the sashimi. All in all, couldn't finish everything with two people, about $40 per person, including tip. About the price you'd expect. Sushi chefs seemed to have a few regulars and friendly with them. Staff are nice. Owner looks like a nice little lady.

Yoshi-san is the MASTER! I have been coming here for a couple of years now. I can tell you without a doubt this is the best sushi from Diamond Bar throughout the Inland Empire. Family business, and everyone is friendly, very warm and welcoming. I am a transplant from the "Valley", home of the Cho Cho San Empire. All I can say is that this place is what Cho Cho San used to be before it exploded in size. Once again, Thank you Yoshi-san for all your hard work, it shows! P.S. Don't forget my chili oil!! ;)

First of all, this is not a Korean owned sushi restaurant. Everyone who works here are Japanese. That being said, this place is pretty legit. Came here for dinner and our waitress sat us at the sushi bar. When you walk in the place isn't big, but the decor is really nice. There were a few groups of people and everyone spoke in a quiet voice. I felt like I had to whisper. Oh, the sushi chef don't make small talk but I didn't mind. Food was really good! We ordered spicy tuna cut roll, eel roll, baked salmon roll, and some kind of crispy octopus roll. Everything was really good. They also gave us complimentary fish soup and strawberries with chocolate sauce over them after we were done. Service was really good. Everyone was very friendly and attentive. Only thing that sucks is that they dont have white tuna. My fav! :( oh wells...

I feel obligated to review Kyala as I eat here as often as I do... The quality of the fish varies from week to week (for a while I thought Tuesday was the best day to go, but that has not proved true consistently enough for me to make it my official opinion). That was a long () statement. Probably too long. But I digress...Despite the variations in quality, the worst quality is still better than most other sushi within a 25-mile radius. Eat here (just don't take my seat...).

Ok I give the food a 5 but the service is a different story they took about 5 minutes before even asking us what we wanted to drink it was not packed so there where a few tables open. They put us at the corner of the room ignoring us and only paying attention to the regulars. It wasn't even until they saw me make a noise to know we were there. Then they took our food order I asked for a combination #2 with ribs and sashimi but instead I got sushi and chicken.. When they first brought me the sushi she knew I was pissed because she said I ordered sushi when I told her no I asked for sashimi so I made her take it back and then when they brought me the chicken I didn't want to deal with it so I just ate it.. The service sucked unless your a regular I wouldn't go..

Valentine's Day dinners are usually full of romance and the sort in the air. In this case, it was full of vicks vapor rub, influenza like symptoms and avoiding tasty fishy sushi nigiri (as quipped by my dinner companion). While everyone was rubbing elbows on this particular evening, I was rubbing pieces of eye crust out of the corner of my pupils. Anyway, the main highlights of this dinner were the following: Trifecta of classical sushi: Tuna, Yellowtail and Salmon. All fresh and maintained in good quality. Blue Fin Toro: It deserves it's separate category, come to papa you melt in your mouth (I'll stab a million samurai, just to have my own lifetime supply) type of delicacy. Spanish Mackerel: Just as good as Ohshima Japanese Cuisine's product (Orange, Ca). We ordered more, but I cannot recall the rest of the items sadly. Customer service, was consistent. As for costs, a box of kleenex, two pairs of chopsticks at $60.00 with tax and tip. Cheers.

I came here for dinner on a weekend with family. I wasn't that hungry but I ended up having the Salmon Teriyaki complete dinner. I didn't want to get the a la carte because it wouldn't be worth getting since it'll just be the salmon teriyaki. The complete dinner included miso soup, a salad, and a bowl of rice. The soup was good, it actually had seaweed and tofu in it. The salad was small but it had a good dressing. The bowl of rice was ok. The salmon teriyaki sauce was a bit salty and a little bit dry. Maybe it was frozen. They also gave this small baked dish with a piece of broccoli, potato and some other stuff in it. The restaurant is small but it has nice modern feel to the restaurant. The waitresses are nice and they picked up all of our dishes after we were done. And they also came by to refill our green teas. I would come here during lunch since it's cheaper and the portions are the same size as the dinner.

This is a nice neighborhood sushi join that I will definitely be returning to in the future. The sushi is fresh, especially the salmon. It was beautifully marbled and super soft. The boyfriend ordered their daily special "b" which included a miso glazed salmon. That was delicious! Next time I am definitely getting one of their miso glazed items. Also, we both loved the salad dressing, not too oniony and perfectly acidic. The staff is also very nice and knowledgeable about their menu items. Next time I am going to try their sashimi salad that looked pretty good when another table ordered it. This location is located in the shopping plaza with the Bank of america and wells fargo right next to Papa John's Pizza. If you are local and craving some good quality sushi, you should come here.

Considering that this is a japanese owned restaurant and the face that they acutally hire real japanese chef behind the sushi bar, this place deserve another 0.5 star thus 3 stars I didn't expect much from a sushi restaurant in Diamond Bar since i normally eat sushi in DTLA area/Japan town. The restaurant actually looks pretty decent and clean. Service is overall good. Its more of a place where you would order lunch/dinner sets not individual sushi alone or izakaya. Location: in a plaza next to papa john's pizza, easy to find and plenty of parking space Food: for 2 people Chirashi Dinenr Set- the dinner set comes with miso soup, salad and the main dish. The salad is refreshing and light, perfect for hot summer days! The chriashi comes with many diff types of sashimi including salmon, octopus, eel, etc. Mostly the typical ones and tamago. The sushi rice was moist and prepared very well. I didn't like the way they cut the sashimi since some of the pieces are way too thick and large to eat. Nigiri Dinner set - Didn't try anything since it looks very similar to what I have except is all rolled up for you : ) Overall, the seafood/sashimi is served fresh. If you are in the mood for decent japanese food in this area, this may be a good choice for you.

This is the perfect place to write my first Yelp review! My family and I literally go to this restaurant at least twice a month, as in, every time I come home from college, my dad takes it upon himself to take us all out to dinner to Kyala to celebrate, just because he loves the food so much, not really because he's celebrating me coming home -_-. We always get the unagi-don, the katsu-don, the sashimi salad, and also the cheeseburger roll, made of baked scallops on top of california/salmon rolls, which is not listed on the menu, but was recommended to us by a waitress several months ago, and which my family has not stopped ordering since! The staff is super friendly and attentive and you never have to ask for a refill of anything. I highly, highly recommend this place, as you can tell from the 5-star review!

There is no way this restaurant is a 4/5.. unless no one has ever had real sushi before. Seriously, for this price and quality, why not just go to Ninja Sushi instead? I realize that Diamond Bar and Walnut don't really have much of a good sushi selection and this place is actually Japanese owned.. which is usually good, but the price did not fit the quality this time. Definitely better than every other place though, but if you're in Diamond Bar, I'd rather go to Sushi Koyo

A good neighborhood Japanese restaurant. Nothing too fancy, but pretty good quality food. Ordered the katsu donburi. It was quite a large bowl of goodness. Normally the rice in donburi can be either kind of gummy or not very flavorful, but there was some kind of sauce in their donburi that made each bite enjoyable. An order of hamachi nigiri was composed of good sushi rice and large pieces of yellowtail. Was it fresh? I dunno. It looked a little dry, but it tasted fine, although not the best I've ever had. Also tried some of the grilled mackerel and the tempura. Pretty decent. Prices I guess were about what you would expect to pay for Japanese. Not cheap, but not ridiculously expensive. Service was great. Very friendly and efficient, although it may have had something to do with the fact that we were one of two occupied tables in the restaurant.

The food is ok, the price is a little higher, the service was disappointed. They have few tables. We were asked to move to a 2 person small table while we were waiting for our order so they can bring their new customers to sit in. End up we were sitting in the smaller table with all our food crowded. The whole dining experience was just so uncomfortable.

Wow, what a wonderful authentic Japanese restaurant. Remodelled recently and looks nicer than 4 years ago. Great authentic, made by Japanese dining! Must dine at the sushi bar and buy your sushi maker beer for the best experience! Attentive service and great value ! A+ for everything!

Really good sushi. The best in Diamond Bar. A bit more expensive than the competition across the way but the freshness makes it worth it. The hot food items are also good. When the weather cools, I like ordering their sukiyaki.

The best place hands down for sushi lovers everywhere. Owner is friendly and will cater to your needs or preference. Sushi chefs are amazing with their skills and it shows with each bite. Delicious miso soup and a complimenting salad( always ask for extra dressing ^_^) best kept secret. I love this place, so enjoy!

Went in cus the high review but end up with disappointment. Service: servers are nice but somehow in slow pace Food: this is not worth it at all... I think even food court bento is better with cheaper price... Even u can make better grilled salmon and taste way better at home... Will not come back

Lots of good reviews for this place but the sashimi kind of fell flat for me. Chirashi: I felt like the quality of raw fish was rather mediocre and portion was kind of small for the price. Miso Cod: This is an appetizer but I love miso cod so I ate it as a meal with a bowl of rice. The fish had good flavor. Salmon skin hand roll: I'm not a big fan of hand rolls as I never know how to properly eat them without getting it all over the place. The seaweed was a little sticky here so it was hard to bite. I think Kyala is a good spot for cooked foods. I'd stick to other places for raw fish though.

This is the ultimate people's authentic Japanese restaurant in Diamond Bar area. Staffs are all super friendly, best chefs making beautiful rolls and handles meat like a champion! OMAKASE is the best way to experience the full course menu until your belly's scream to stop. I fell in love with this place, not at sight, took me some time to know their style and regular people @ the bar; once you get the hang of it, you can't quit going there!!! it's the best way to relax enjoy the superb seasonal aged fish(only the best know how to age tuna to make so tender) and of course great selection of cold sake as well as dishes from the kitchen. I am a believer of sushi chef rating based on their skill in marinate mackerel and cook tamago(basic of the basic), and they got the best in the area. If you are more suitable with all you can eat sushi and doesn't see the difference of value of the sushi, I don't recommend this place, but whoever knows the true value in quality and service, you won't be disappointed.

i was glad my friend made reservations, because i walked into a small, but full restaurant at 7pm on a weekday. the waitress was really sweet and patient as i waited 20 minutes for my friend to arrive. i ordered the chicken teriyaki and tonkatsu combo. it came on a full big plate. the chicken was incredibly tender and the teriyaki dressing was not very salty, yet still flavorful. the pork in the katsu was also really tender. the deep fried batter tasted anything but that... it was crispy, but light. my friend's sashimi salad also looked fresh and appetizing, although i don't eat sashimi. i will have to hit up this spot again and check out its happy hour :)

I come here A LOT. It's one of my favorite restaurants. They make their spicy tuna with siracha chili sauce (I call it cock sauce since there's a rooster on it), so its hotter than most spicy tuna rolls I've tasted. Also, I can't seem to find any mayo in the roll... YES! :D I hate mayo anyways. Their yellow tail collar is awesome and goes for market price. The specials they usually have are pretty good deals too! Collar, tempura, teriyaki chicken.. They have pre-set combos to choose from and the specials can be found outside the door before you walk in. I have 3 favorite orders: Salmon sashimi with a bowl of rice -- 5 fairly large pieces of sashimi (if you're really hungry, get something else to go along with this) Chicken salad -- Lots of chicken breast ontop of their salad. The things huge. I always have extra to take home for lunch the next day :] Spicy tuna OR poki bowl -- I love both. Sometimes they mix the tuna and the salmon together for the poki. mmmm The service over here is also the best I've had compared to other places. They open at 5 for dinner... My suggestion: Go at 5. There's no wait at all!

We came here cause of the high reviews... we saw that people got free food here that's why they gave high ratings. My GF and I spent $46 here and we were still hungry at the end of the day. Yes the food was good, but was it worth the price? Not really... Food was good, but not that good for me to say that it was worth $46.... If only we had gotten free rolls /apetizers like the others did, I may think that it was worth it. Of course if you're rich, and you don't care about money.. sure this place is good. Here's what I grade it: Service: 4 stars Food: 4 Stars Price: 1 Star.

My parents and I came in here for lunch, my mom recommending it to me as this is my first time here. It was pretty packed when we got here but were seated at the bar within a couple minutes. I have to say the sushi bar is what I like about this place because they get their orders out relatively quickly. The combination plates we got however, took about 30-45 minutes to get to us. On top of that the mixed our orders up a bit. I ordered tonkatsu (pork) and a Saba shioyaki (mackerel) and my mom ordered a chicken cutlet and California roll, but when we got it they mixed chicken cutlet and tonkatsu up. On top of that, we ordered today's special which came out after the guests to the left us got there orders first even though they came 15 minutes in after us. I felt like the food from the sushi bar was up to bar, but the Saba Shioyaki I ordered was extremely dry and tough to eat. TL;DR Service was extremely slow and confused. Sushi was good, regular lunch was could have been better.

I really love this sushi place. The staff is very friendly and Japanese and the food is amazing. And then to boot the prices are great. They have a wide variety of lunch and dinner specials. It's really my favorite place to go in Diamond Bar and I highly recommend it. Note, they are closed on Mondays.

Good quality japanese food. A little bit on the pricier side but they take their time making the food, which you can tell by how organized it is when you receive it. It isn't that much better than other japanese restaurants around here, but i come here if i dont care about saving a couple of bucks.

I usually stick with only a handful of authentic sushi places because good places are indeed hard to find, I decided to give it a try b/c of the high rating o Yelp, but this one too is a disappointment. Atmosphere and setting is good, service is good, however, food is over-priced! Especially the rolls. We ordered a rainbow roll, it is so small and tasted/looked like something you can get from the supermarket, for $13ish dollar, I am expecting something better. Chirashi bowl, (same applies to the rainbow roll) the fish quality is not bad, but they are stingy on quantity. I don't know about their cooked food (just to be fair), however, if raw fish is what u like, definitely think that there are better places out there.

This establishment feels like an authentic japanese restaurant. Nice decor, great service and good food makes up for a great blend of attributes to a restaurant. My wife ordered a 2-item combo and got the grilled salmon & whitefish shioyaki. Though the salmon was a little dry, I really liked the crispiness of the skin. The whitefish had a little bit of mayo on it which gave it a nice flavor. I ordered the Oyako donburi (chicken, egg, on top of rice) and it was delicious. My only gripe is the price. It's pretty expensive. My wife's 2-item combo was $15 and my oyako don was $12. It's a bit steep for what you get. Other than the price, the overall experience was a good one. I will come back in the future and sit at the sushi bar to get the sashimi. Can't wait!

Service was okay, but their fish quality has went down significantly. Our tuna sashimi was icy and salmon color looked odd. Fried calamari was superoily and batter fell off. The best dish was the oversauced chicken teriyaki.

This place is a hidden little gem. From the outside you would probably just overlook the place. I certainly did until a friend recommended it to me. If you come here, definitely try sitting at the bar to get terrific personal service from the sushi chefs. Yoshi, one of the chefs, is awesome. He oftentimes gives customers small samples of different things to try for free. The last time I was here, he gave my friend and I this one roll he dubbed the "Animal Style" roll - had a bunch of fried shoestring onions on top and spicy tuna inside. So delicious! He also gave us chocolate dipped strawberries for dessert. All at no charge. The sushi here is always fresh. My favorite is their rainbow roll - a classic, but the freshness of the fish really pushes it over the top.

This is a great neighborhood jewel in diamond bar, pun intended. Seriously thought my first time in here we got a free small appetizer a slice of fresh sashimi salmon with a light pepper coating and some type of light colored soy sauce. It was delicious, this was followed up by the tuna roll and california roll, both had a good texture, great tasting rice, and yummy fish. We also ordered the yakitori the pieces of chicken were nicely cooked and had a little fat to make them a little more delicious, the sauce was great and the amount of meat was very generous for an appetizer for two. The bonus was they must have known we were first timers because they treated us like royalty, not only did we get the free appetizers, but also a fresh fish soup with bits of fish meat and bones, and they ended the night with slices of pineapple all for free. We spent $22.00 for everything but we had to leave them an extra generous tip for treating us so well. The people next to us were regulars and there were even some teenage kids, you see a variety of people here, latino, caucasion, asian, so I was really impressed that this place was able to offer such great service and pull so many different people from different cultures to one place. One funny thing though was that it must have been "American guy bring your asian wife/girlfriend to dinner night", that was fun to notice and everyone seemed to be having a nice, cozy, and relaxing time. highly recommend.

It was my first time here and i would defently go back. We had a tempura crunch roll, rainbow roll, order of salmon sushi, albacore and sea urchin we also had a side order of stuffed mushrooms and miso soup. All food was very fresh and very good and the waitress knew where they get their sea urchin from and the diffrance of it. I only gave it 3 stars beacous it was a smaller restaurant and our table was basically in the host booth and the restaurant it self was very plain and had no personality

I love this place and have been coming for years. Each time is wonderful. I always get the sashimi salad, it is big enough for an entree. Big pieces of fish. If you ask how many pieces of sashimi, they will say something like 5 or something, but they are huge pieces that I cut up. Has salmon, tuna, yellowtail, octopus sometimes, and pine nuts! and the dressing is yummy! I used to have to decide between the sashimi salad and the calamari salad. The calamari salad is a bit heavy on the dressing so get it on the side. What I do now is get the sashimi salad, then an order of fried calamari appetizer and instead of the ponzu dipping sauce, I ask for the calamari salad dressing. many times I have also ordered to go for my bf, and he always get the calamari salad. I ask them to separate the calamari from the salad from the dressing, they always do it, and always get everything right. They run out of uni sometimes though :( but not knocking a star off for that. That just means its fresh and people order it a lot. The only thing is that this place is small, and if you get there at the wrong time you will have to wait, and sometimes long, even if you have a reservation. But that's not their fault, it's the other customers who are done eating, already paid, and just sitting there digesting their food and picking their teeth while they know other starving people are waiting to eat. Can you tell this has happened to me before? We waited so long that it was almost closing time already, but since we were a big party, about 8 of us, they stayed open for us, and everything was still available, except for the uni which was sold out. All the holidays they have special menus as well as the regular menu. Good deals. Can't wait to go back.

Terrific terrific food !! The sushi is nice and fat and flavorful, and the salad dressing is soo delicious and unique. The terriyaki beef/chicken/salmon is always nice and tender, and the beef tataki is to die for! & the fried calamaris are small and crispy and just very good. Food always tastes fresh! And if you sit at the sushi bar, you can get a free sample of whatever the chef is making that day and free chocolate drizzled fruit at the end. The waitresses/waiter are very cute too. And the sushi maker. They look like happy folk. As a bonus, sometimes you can see Jack Tanaka here with his wife ... He's the mayor, btw. It's rather like seeing a celebrity! (edit 2013: He is no longer the mayor, but I still see him here.) Plus it is very clean in here and the service is good. Kind of expensive, but I think the quality is very HIGH. This is usually where I end up if I have family visiting the area or something and my family wants to impress them with good quality sushi.

came here for lunch because i wanted to try a new sushi joint. baked salmon rolls is definitely one of my faves and i wanted to see how great it was here since it's priced at $13.50! the baked salmon roll came out o.k. the rice was a little bit hard and the salmon was thin. i've had better. i originally gave 3 stars but bumped up the rating to 4 stars because the host who was helping me was very nice. i also asked for an extra side of sriracha and was expecting a few squirts in the tiny plastic sauce cup but she filled it up to the very top.

Ehhh might as well just sum this spot up. Going to make this short and to the point. Pros: + Friendly staff + Food came up super quick + Spicy Scallop Roll and Baked Salmon Roll Cons: - Price. Price. And Price. Paying $4.00 for Edemame is absurd. Isn't this usually free?!?! And $2.00 for a scoop of Green Tea Ice Cream?!?! C'mon now! - Sushi wasn't wrapped or cut very well. As soon as we picked it up with our chop sticks they came right apart. - Shrimp Tempura Roll was pretty weak

Definitely not a place to go to if you're expecting large American-sized rolls.. Nope, here you'll find some nicely proportioned and delicious Japanese sized sushi rolls.. It'd been a while since I visited and I don't remember the exact specifics of our order but rest assured, each piece of sushi was well worth it's price! The rolls here were simply delicious and I wouldn't doubt that you'd find your fancy tickled here.. Yay for for new sushi spots!

I love this place but got disappointed lately when I ordered takeout. I ordered a dinner portion of my favorite, the calamari salad. When I got home I was not too happy to see the portion they gave me looked like a lunch portion. what the hell?

My friends and I decided to try out this restaurant on a whim. We were looking for someplace new to eat at and this one came highly recommended on Yelp. It is a little bit on the expensive side, but we tried to remain frugal by ordering udon bowls and sharing a caterpillar roll. Although we came near closing time, we were happily seated and the service was wonderful. Even after they had closed their doors to the public, we were encouraged to take our time eating and were even offered complimentary california rolls as they were extras that would've just gone to waste otherwise. Great people, great food! I'll stop by here whenever I'm in the mood for good Japanese food and willing to splurge a little.

I've always known about Kyala due to my many trips to Jade House, Lollicup and the Whole Enchilada, but had never been until last week. See the thing is, my Japanese parents were convinced that Kyala was run by Chinese due to the weird name, plus from the street the windows are super dark so it looks like no one is ever in there. For those reasons, we've probably been to every Japanese restaurant in a 25 mile radius, except for Kayla. That is, until Sarina W. suggested we meet there for dinner. I was pleasantly surprised! Yes, it is run by Japanese people and the food was very good. I was trying to be diligent with my so called diet so I had the sashimi salad. It was topped with a generous selection of fresh fish and a slightly tangy dressing. The rolls my friends had looked awesome as well. I'm looking forward to trying out some of the other menu selections and also bringing my parents here. Because nothing makes me happier than good sushi and proving my parents wrong!

I was just here maybe a couple of hours ago with my co-worker. We had a hard time deciding where to eat and then we had this light that lit up in our brains, to come here. Of course we didn't know the name because on the outside it just says sushi. All I remembered was that it was next to Ralph's and in the same plaza as Saigon Noodle House. Well, regardless, we came, got situated and ordered. We came right after work and were starving. Lucky for us, right now they have an anniversary special where you get 3 items, miso, and salad for $15. We both chose the sashimi and salmon teriyaki, while I got the fried oysters and he got sushi. When I first took a bite of the salmon, it was sooo good. The sashimi was pretty big. And oh so tasty! I was pretty surprised how fresh the sushi was. The decor is ok, nothing fancy, just some red, black, and white paint. It's a pretty small place too. I don't recommend an anniversary dinner or a birthday dinner here, but if you want to try a tasty place that is pretty fresh, I definately would recommend this place.

One thing about sushi joints ... always closes by 9pm. What happened to late night dining for sushi? But I came around this place because Sushi Koyo decided to close right 30 minutes with an open sign. Kyala Sushi had the best reviews, therefore my other option to go. The service was great, the waitress very attentive and seated us immediately. The place is homey and nice seating arrangement. I did hear actual Japanese coming from the sushi chef, so that's a plus We ordered ... - Soft Shell Crab (appetizer) - Spicy Scallop Cut Roll - Yellowtail Sushi - Salmon Sushi - Tuna Sushi - Albacore Sushi - Kanpachi Sushi (Amberjack) The sushi was very big cuts. I saw the sushi chef slowly slicing the pieces from the fish, oh man, he did not skimp at all. The usual price is worth it. However, the salmon sushi came out a little frozen. There was a frozen bite to it once it hit the middle. Salmon is one of my favorite, and the cold bite did it for me. Other than the big cuts, there isn't anything much special about the sushi.

The restaurant is located in the same plaza as bank of america and wells fargo. It's right next to papa john's pizza. friendly and very attentive servers. food was good, but nothing mind blowing...and it came out quick. however, the food was a little bit on the pricey side for a lunch.

I ate there many time, both lunch and dinner. This little restaurant has great sushi and dinner entree (some Japanese restaurant has great sushi but not the dinner entree). They are little pricy but the quality of their food is good overall. Their service is good too. Since it's a small restaurant, expect for a wait especially during Friday and weekends. But worth the wait!

I must've passed by this place a gazillion times and never gave this place a second thought. From far away, all you'll see is the big "SUSHI" sign, but if you get real close, you'll see their dinky Kyala sign. After reading all these great reviews, I had to check this place out myself. We got to Kyala a little before 9PM and they were closing at 9:30, so we asked if it was too late for us to get dinner here. The hostess was busy taking a take-out order but she smiled and happily sat us at the sushi bar. We went with the omikase since I was too lazy to order. Our sushi chef immediately asked us what we didn't like, so he wouldn't include it in our meal. The only thing that came to my mind was wasabi. So I am the most finicky eater EVER. If I really thought about it, I would've easily given him a long list of things I didn't like. We first got bluefin tuna and kanpachi. YES! They get a star for having kanpachi. LoveloveLOVE kanpachi. I won't be able to name all the sushi we got because our chef's English was reaaaal bad, but no complaints there! I just ate everything he brought. Then he made squid with this huge leaf under it. My friend said it was a mint leaf, but I didn't believe it (I completely despise ANYTHING mint). Holy crap, it really was a mint leaf! I really wanted to gag, but I wasn't about to embarrass myself. I just swallowed it as tears welled up in my eyes. We also got miso soup with shrimp head and the raw sweet shrimp sushi. We got a super small serving of baked yellowtail with pickled cucumbers. The clam sushi was HUGE and juicy. There was also a cut roll that had avacado in it (I hate avacado) but I ate it anyway. The last one he gave us was a giant mushroom sushi. I was unimpressed. So uncreative!! He also made a few other sushis, but I don't know what they were. Overall, I'd have to say this place is good. The sushi isn't as fresh as I expected, but it wasn't terrible. Service is above average and the prices are normal. This place is super tiny, but surprisingly spacious. We were pretty stuffed by the end of the meal, and the bill came out to $35 per person with tip. We got a bowl of free dessert. It was red bean ice cream with some sort of green jelly-like thing that had the consistency of taro. Not sure what it was, but I could only stomach a few bites. This place beats all the sushi places in the area, but it's definitely not my favorite. I'd probably come and eat here if I were too lazy to drive to my favorite spot.

Impeccably clean, delicious, reasonable, and good service. What more could you ask for? This is a Japanese-family owned business and they recently went through remodeling. Fresh sushi and delicious donburi bowls. My friend and I shared one and we were stuffed! This was before our yellowtail roll came out.

This is by far the best sushi in the area. I moved from here to San Francisco fovea years ago and this place competes with any great sushi in the entire Bay Area. The owners Yoshi and Michiko (sp?) are WONDERFUL, friendly people and masters of their craft. I go out of my way to eat here whenever I'm in the LA area. A must-try.

I saw so many reviews and high stars thinking "YESSS finally a good sushi place in DB!!" but NOOOOOO this place is eekk! It is probably same if not worse than Yoko....... Fish is definitely not that fresh and the rice was so "mushy" that just doesn't feel right. The staffs are amazing but I don't think I will come back again. I am giving it 2 stars hoping to average out the high stars review!!!!

Had heard good things about Kyala. Excited to try a new place with friends. The place was very small but crowded; the hostess was busy juggling table service and a takeout order before even greeting us. Surprised there was no free edamame appetizer like at most other Japanese restaurants. We ordered beef teriyaki, tempura, a sashimi plate with rice, and pork katsu with a side of California roll. Review: Tempura was crisp and fresh. Best I've tasted! Sashimi was generous portions, but too large to eat politely. Beef teriyaki was fine. Pork katsu was a disappointment...dried out and chewy. California roll was not very good at all; no flavor. After 2 pieces, I gave up and left the rest. Chocolate drizzled strawberries? We didn't get any. Maybe they're for regular patrons? Bottom Line: Won't be going back. Unless we're only in the mood for great tempura.

This is the only japanese restaurant I've ever been to so I don't really know what qualifies as good. I found the food extremely overpriced though. :(

You CANNOT go wrong with this place. Sushi bar chefs are very nice. They give you nicely cut strawberries with chocolate syrup when you're done eating. A kind and unexpected treat!

Visited this place last weekend. The food is pricy however it kept its originality and the taste was delicious. The food was well seasoned and the salad was very fresh. Each person in my group was enjoying the food. The atmosphere is very smoothing and the waitress was very patient and kind. Thumbs up for this place, it was quiet appearing outside but it is definitely one of the best Japanese Cuisine restaurants that I visited in Los Angeles county.

LOVE THIS PLACE! The mark of a good japanese place is the sashimi, and this place has got it! They're tuna and salmon is fab! Ive had the chicken/beef teriyaki, its good. For those who dont do fish, it wouldnt disappoint. They have good sushi rolls, i pretty much love anything with unagi. Miso soup is good, not too salty. Good service, place is a little small and pricey but the food is worth. thumbs up for kyala!

It's our family's local spot for sushi. The portions are generous and fresh. Stay away from their udon and stick to the a la cart sushi menu. The sashimi salad is good. Miso soup is average. The service is very good.

This spot isn't to bad. I think I have to try it a few more times before I can give it more then 3 stars. The service wasn't bad. Everyone was friendly. I think our waiter was new. He had a few screw ups but he apologized. Nothing major. Didn't bother us. We ordered Spicey Salmon/Cut, Rainbow Roll/Cut, Philly Hand Roll, and Fried Oysters. Food was not bad. A buddy put the bar really high but I have to go back to try other dishes. It's a small cozy place. Very clean. They had some asian style Cyndi Lauper playing. LoL. I Will def. be back. ; ^ D

I've ordered the ahi poke, miso seabass, sashimi salad, and hamachi sashimi here several times with family and friends, and the food has always been consistently great! The ahi poke is excellent for poke in Los Angeles, although my favorite is in Hawai'i. It's served in a martini glass with sprinkles of masago, and garnished with fresh seaweed. The miso seabass is served with a very light creamy sauce & string beans. The sashimi salad comes with several pieces of fresh sashimi and spicy tuna over lettuce and a few slices of cucumber with a tasty ponzu-like salad dressing. The slices of hamachi sashimi have always been noticeably larger than what most Japanese restaurants and sushi bars serve. Although it can get pretty busy on Friday nights and weekends, the service has always been excellent, attentive, & friendly! And being Japanese-American, I especially appreciate actual Japanese owners at Kyala, unlike most "Japanese" restaurants in the area!

Tried this place cuz hubs saw that it got good reviews on yelp. There is a great sushi place across the street from our house, but we decided to explore and drive to Kyala to try something new. This place is a little hole in the wall right next to Ralphs supermarket. The set up inside the restaurant was nice, new and open. I ordered a California roll that was good but not spectacular, and a special item that was something like taro balls in miso soup, but tasted just like plain ol potatoes. Hubs tried 3 different sashimi items, that he said were ok but he was not blown away. When the bill came I thought we got someone else's check by mistake, cuz that was the quickest $50 we've blown on a just-ok meal. All in all, not driving to this place again. Nothing great, and not worth the extra drive. Bobby Sushi is just a few blocks away from this place, also on Diamond Bar Blvd and is way better, and lucky for us it's just right across the street.

The best Sushi restaurant in Diamond Bar. Not only is the food fantastic, the Sushi chefs are very nice and friendly. If you become a regular they remember your name. Wonderful place.

I have enjoyed coming to Kyala for several years. The food and service have been, and are still, really good. I've seen the decor change over the years. I like it; the room is small, but doesn't feel cramped. The menu has the old reliable Japanese stalwarts, and the kitchen does a fine job. I can't talk about the sushi, as I am not well versed in that area, but the bar is usually full when I am there. The prices are reasonable, and you could leave with a drink and dinner for $20.00 or so. So what's not to like?

Decided to try this place on a weekday after checking out Yelp. They don't really have a sign so its hard to distinguish. But we find it and walk in, it's packed. The tables are just about full and the sushi bar is jammed. We sit at a table and order the following, 1.) Sukiyaki ( looked good tasted good) 2.) Mixed Tempura dinner ( looked good tasted good) 3.) Salmon Dinner (looked large tasted EEK) 4.) Appetizers calamari great, stuffed shitake mushrooms fair, spicy fried tofu good. 5.) Terriyaki chicken dinner (looked good tasted good)(how bad can terriyaki chicken be smothered in yucky sauce) The service was good, I wouldn't go back for the cooked food but the sushi bar looked good, lots of fresh and exotic fish. So I will be reviewing this place again strictly on the sushi bar.

I love trying new places and using my trusty Yelp to help me find it. So Hao L. and Jennifer A. decided to go to this neighborhood sushi joint. It's small, quaint, and typical Japanese from head to toe. Service is good but try and come at slightly off times or else you probably may have to wait a few minutes or two. They have a typical wide selection of sushi and salads and plate dishes. My boyfriend and I shared 3 rolls of sushi: Philadelphia roll, shrimp tempura roll, and baked salmon roll. Ok I know what you're thinking? That's not REAL sushi!?! Well, we're still learning to try new sushi. We're not that adventurous when it comes to sushi but we're trying. Baby steps people! hehe But the sushi was excellent. I had better baked salmon roll at Akasaka in Walnut, but Kyala's version is still good nonetheless. Definitely give this place a try. It's delicious and when you're done with dinner, walk over to Lollicup a few doors down. hehehe

I would agree with the Yelpers that this place is quite cozy! It's nice and small just that way I like many things. Food was decently priced and service was great! We were in there for almost 3 hours and they did not say a word or try to get you out. I love it about that :) I guess, good companies make time goes faster w/o even knowing that it is .... Oh yeah, there's no happy hour anymore .. apparently took that our couple of months ago so they just have some appetizers specials on T-Th and sake. Boooo...HH come back :) Thanks for fresh fishies though!

Please do not pay attention to the 2-3 star ratings below. We eat here regularly and we always get GREAT SERVICE and GREAT FOOD. Being regulars, we notice the consistently great service and food at other tables too. More than likely, the 2-3 star ratings below have not had real Japanese food before. Michiko and Yoshi work very hard to exceed their customers expectations and it shows. Visit Kyala and you will not be disappointed.

seriously meh.... The food wasn't terrible, but it wasn't noteworthy. I'm sure if i had access to their kitchen I could probably make my own food and like it. It won't be pretty, but then the standards here didn't seem too high to compete with anyways... I just wanted a sushi place, and kyala had 4 stars. That seemed really good for me, and so my friends and I went on a quest to find this so called hiddenn gem/hole in the wall place. okkkk so for people who haven't been here before and would like to try, look for the Ralphs plaza. You won't see the sign for kyala until you're right in front of it walking towards the door. Therefore, Look for SUSHI, i think it was 'sushi house' and thats where kyala is. We thought it was a completely different sushi restaurant and made rounds around the plaza and the plaza on the other side of the street. DAMN IT, gas is super expensivee!! Finally got to the restaurant. uhhhhh, was not greeted immediately by staff. really? the place is so tiny and it wasn't that crowded.. We grabbed our own menus and waited to be seated within 10 minutes. Our waiter was nice though. He gave us enough time to look through the menu. I gave one more star because he let my friend get a kid's meal HAHA. There were five girls total, and the food did not come out together. The latter part of the delivery also came out quite slowly. mmm, I got a rainbow roll. A rainbow roll is a rainbow roll and it was fine. The kid's meal came on a cute tiny little kid's almost bento-ish style plate. HAHA the servings are tiny but heyyyy you get ice cream or mochi at the end :D Since we came to the restaurant late, it was almost closing time (9:30) but we didn't realize it and were quickly the last ones still. We tried to be quick, but the staff seemed busy and were not ready to accomodate us... like we're going to leave all the money and give you guys the rest of the change.... uhhh nooo I really don't think we were super lagging and slow. But on the way out I yelled out thank you. But no one said bye or thank you back. how not cool (and now back to 2 stars) I will definitely not be coming back here. There are better places, with better ambience and better service with better prices. And other sushi places close by too.

The new and improved Kyala is open for business once again. Same owners, same staff, same location, same hours and above all the same great food! Just more of a modern feel, tad bit more room and much more esthetically pleasing.

This place is not traditional sushi...at least not 100%. I think they are more known for their lunch and dinner combinations, which is huge and delicious. So if you're in the mood for chicken/beek/salmon teriyaki-I say go for it! It comes with rice, salad, miso and you can even add spicy tuna roll, etc. Their rolls really pretty big and they are pretty good too. (I'm not much of a roll fan, but I would eat them here.) Their sushi is fresh and they always have yummy specials of the day. This place is kinda small, so get here early. I want to give this place a 3.5 b/c their cooked food is really good and their sushi is pretty good but too bad I gotta drop the 1/2 star. =(

This review is based on their omakase only. I really wanted to love this place more. I was there on a busy Friday night and asked for omakase (chef's selection). I tried omakase at other places before and I think I know what to expect from it. I have to admit that it was quite a disappointment. Yes, the quality of the food is exceptional. Everything was fresh and all. BUT...it was nothing special like other places I've tried. It's more like a deluxe sushi dinner set...nothing really wow us. I guess they were too busy but hey that shouldn't be an excuse when I pretty much told them...serve me whatever...I'll eat and don't care how much it might cost. Ended up spending $60 or so per person (and I didn't eat at lot). I'd rather go to sushi Koyo for this.

All their food is excellent. I go for the sushi. Find a seat at the sushi bar and just tell the chefs to put on a show. I recently took a couple of friends and enjoyed probably my best dinner there. I am not sure how they did it, but I thought I already had the best last time there. Yoshi is the main chef and owner, along with his wife Michiko. There's only one thing I am pushing them to get. Orion Japanese beer. It's the best and that would put me there at least once a week. I've also tried many sushi bars all over SoCal and this one is tops. Used to have some options, but the others decided to cut back during the recession and don't offer the same high value I look for. Kyala is worth the money and I spend every time...

If you went and tried to look for the restaurant's name, Kyala, drove around, frustrated, don't worry, it's not you, because none existent. But it is the ONLY sushi bar in that plaza. the seaweed salad was not what we had expected, not the typical green transparent ones, in fact it was difficult to find any seaweed in that salad period, just some on the surface of the bowl . . . we ordered salmon sashimi, halibut sushi, yellowtail sushi, scallop (hotate) sushi, toro, and the caterpiller roll (only because my friend insisted on getting a roll with eel). only recalling halibut being really really good, every else mediocre. They forgot about our yellowtail order but later give it to us for free. service was polite and prompt, other than that, nothing spectacular about this place, but if you don't want to drive far and just have to have some sushi, come.

Maybe I went on an off night but the food was mediocre at best. The sushi chef preparing our food seemed to be sick and was sniffing and sneezing - not appetizing to say the least.

Arrived at 11:45am & the place was already packed but luckily for us, there was room at the sushi bar. Everyone is always so friendly here. Service is fast and food is good. Had lunch in an hour! Love this place!!!! :0)

Went there last night for dinner. The sushi chefs at the bar are super friendly, and very attentive. Hands down, best sushi in the area! We sat at the bar. Everything was so fresh; melted like butter. We had salmon, blue fin, yellowtail, toro, calamari, albacore...all delicious and great portions. This is, without a doubt, my new sushi spot.

Been back here again for a father's day dinner redemption. Went to Wafu of Japan yesterday which was disappointing (read review). As this is my "go to" place near home, it fulfilled my cravings for good, scratch that, great sushi. Traditional edomae (traditional sushi) without the hype of the rolls. Here, its the fish. No dressing, sauces, etc. to disquise the fish quality as you would in a roll. Face it, most rolls you don't even taste the fish. It was a busy father's day evening, But needed my fill, and redeeming a wasted saturday night early father's day dinner. The wait was nearly 40 minutes for the sushi bar, and people still came in after us. That's sign of a good restaurant. In Wafu of Japan, did I say it was dead after 7:45pm?..oh yeah I did!. We had the omakase. Everything was great! Not only fish, but included crafted mini chawan mushi, kurobuta yakitori, jelly fish with seaweed, grilled japanese tai (red snapper) bones with meat between the bones. Plus the sashimi and sush...full redemption for the night before. Thanks Kyala for saving father's day for us! We'll see you again shortly.

This is my family's favorite Japanese Restaurant. We go here whenever it's someone's birthday and we have been coming here since my little sister was born, which was the same year Kyala started. My sisters and I order the beef teriyaki with sashimi every time we eat here. I find the beef teriyaki perfect. Not hard, not too chewy, but soft. I started eating sashimi after eating at Kyala. I was sitting at the bar one time and the chef asked me if I wanted to try anything. I told him that I've never had sashimi before so then he offered me different kinds of sashimi. Instantly fell in love with salmon sashimi. We also love the california roll here. We don't go here too often, though, because the prices are kinda high. Not extremely, but we decided that we could try different sushi restaurants around the area for a bit cheaper. I can definitely say that you get what you pay for here, though. If you put in a few extra dollars, you'll receive a really good meal that you're more than satisfied with.

Love this place..Haven't had anything bad at this place. It's very small place so make sure you come prior to being really hungry because you might have to wait. this is my all time favorite place and i will drive to this place when i want sushi or their food period. Food is great and FRESH!!! We were able to get Lunch in 1 hour for our group of 5 so that is great.

If you're looking for sushi in Diamond Bar or any neighboring city, this is the place to go. This is a nice, Japanese family owned restaurant with sushi bar. I have been in the restaurant industry for over 9 years and I can say that Yoshi makes sure that he has great cuts of fish for sushi. The service is also wonderful and friendly. I will go back many more times.

My husband and I always loved this place and came very often. But tonight's experience was bad! Customer's service was bad. We got there for dinner and we were next to be seated. We informed the young gentleman we were a party of two and he acknowledged us, cleared a table, and I guess because it was so close to the next table, he didn't seat us. But he didn't return to inform us or tell the other waitresses we were waiting. Then a lot of people came suddenly and a waitress asked all of us for the number of parties. A table was clear and a pair of customers cut in front and took the table. My husband and I informed the waitress of what happened and nothing. All she did was nod and looked for another table to clear when everything is filled. It's unacceptable!! How many times should we tell them we are a party of two!! The restaurant didn't even bother of getting a sign in sheet to take down people's name and party number especially when there were at least 4 new parties there waiting in a tiny area!!!!! Come on, get organize!!!! If your place is frequently busy, at least have a system of managing and take down names and party numbers. If not, at least have the waitresses inform other waitresses/waiters who came first!!

Baked salmon roll was delicious. The spider roll was alright. We also ordered the bento box. Their miso soup comes out hot and is packed with lots of flavor. Their sashimi was very fresh too. We wanted to order the toro for about $10.50 for two pieces but got too full. Next time :) The place is small and can get packed during the usual lunch times so be prepared to wait awhile. It's located in a shopping area with tons of banks near by. It was a little pricey but the quality was there.

This place is waaay overpriced. Baked salmon roll was $13.95 when I can easily get the same thing at another sushi restaurant for 4 dollars cheaper. I have to admit, this is an authentic Japanese restaurant with a completely Japanese staff. Service is friendly and the staff really does try to make you happy. The only thing I was iffy about was that they didn't catch on when we needed refills. My friends and I got a baked salmon roll(as mentioned before), spicy scallop roll, and calamari tempura. The rolls were delicious. However, I was extremely disappointed to see that they give you such a small amount of food with an expensive price. My friends and I were still hungry so we got a dinner combo with spicy tuna rolls and salmon teriyaki.Calamari was not the squid rings that I see at other japanese restaurants. Despite of the high quality food and decent service, it's not worth the extra money I pay when I can go to another sushi restaurant for the same quality, cheaper price, and larger portions.

I've been coming here since the day they first opened, and over the years Yoshi and Michiko have become something akin to family. Every time I'm back home from college for a weekend, I head straight for Kyala's waiting doors. You could say it's my home away from home... All biases of being long-term clientele aside, the food here is excellent. I haven't been back to Japan since I was born, but I've been raised with Japanese home cooking as a constant in my life. I've wandered through and sampled my fair share of Japanese eateries in SoCal, Hawaii, and otherwise; none of those in the same price range hold a candle to Kyala. It's not priced like Urasawa or Sasabune, but then again, it was never meant to be; Kyala serves delicious Japanese food at reasonable prices. There's no pretentiousness here, there's just a small, family-owned restaurant with great tasting grub. The sushi's fresh, the dinner portions are filling and always delicious, the appetizers are reasonably inventive, the service has always been good, and the restaurant is clean. It's been almost (or over? It's been too long) a decade now of good food and good memories, and here's to another decade to come. Do yourself a favor, and stop in here when you're in the 909, you won't regret it!

The food was great! This place does look like a "hole in the wall", but rest assured the food is nothing short of amazing. Their service is just as amazing as their food. Servers are extremely attentive and courteous. We ordered... Dinner Special($15): Beef Teriyaki: Meat was cooked medium well. very soft. not chewy. Salmon Teriyaki: Salmon was cooked to perfection. Flakey & moist. not dry at all!! Sashimi 4pcs: Salmon & Tuna, FRESH, Soft, buttery, melt in your mouth goodness. Baked Salmon on top of Cal Roll($13.50): BEST WE'VE EVER HAD!!! end of story. Shrimp Tempura Crunchy($9.50): verrrrry crunchy!!! DELICIOUS!! We will definitely be returning customers. Again Food was amazing. Service was amazing.

Definitely surprised by this hole in the wall sushi spot! Located next to Ralph's in a large shopping area - don't be fooled, good sushi and it's pretty popular too! Went here for lunch on a Friday afternoon. When I walked in at 1145, there were only a couple of tables occupied - by the time I left around 1245, there were people waiting to be seated in the full restaurant! Despite what looked like good value lunch deals, we opted for just sushi for lunch. We had - spicy tuna roll, rainbow roll on spicy tuna (instead of CA roll), yellowtail and green onion roll, caterpillar roll. One of the things I realized right away is that the rolls are just a tad larger than you'd see at many sushi restaurants - great plus! The spicy tuna roll was great - one of the best ones I've had because, like I said, the rolls were a tad larger, AND you could actually taste the spice. The rainbow roll was quite good as well - all of the fish seemed pretty fresh. I wasn't too fond of the yellowtail/green onion rolll, but my friend thought it was the best of all 4. The caterpillar was just as good as the rest as well - still fresh and hot when served to us. But despite all the good things I've had to say, only 3 stars? Yes! The downfall of the sushi was that the rolls didn't seem to be "prepared" well - they were all breaking apart on us! That to me = FAIL! *sigh*

So on mother's day I got off work kind of late and the hubster and I were craving sushi. The only problem is that from my experience of other sushi places a lot of them don't open on sunday and it was also getting pretty late. I remembered I had bookmarked this place because it's so closed to the house, called, they were still open and off we went. Delicious! Had like three specialty rolls and I forgot what the fourth one was and two beers came out to $60. I guess the norm with sushi. If it wasn't for Yelp we wouldn't have ever heard of this place because you can't really see it when you drive down the street. Small place, small sign. It's right next to Ralph's.

This is a pretty nice little sushi joint. A whole in the wall, but the sushi is DELECTABLE. Yeah -- that's what I'd call it. My Auntie and I had: ~ Salmon Sashimi ~ Dragon Roll ~ Rainbow Roll ~ Baked Salmon on top of Cal Roll AND...all was very yummy -- I mean, delectable! It's definitely a gem in Diamond Bar. However, it may make your wallet a little lighter, because the prices may be steep for some. Minus one star for that ;-)

Like almost all other yelpers have said, Kyala is really a hole in the wall restaurant that you're either very lucky to stumble upon or have the luxury of friends that have recommended it in person or through yelp. Its a very cozy place, but it is a bit dark. It feels very private/secretive haha but a nice place overall. I came here for lunch on a Tuesday, and the prices were surprisingly very affordable for the amount of food. I decided to go with a combination instead of just sushi, so I got the chicken teriyaki with sashimi. It came with miso soup which was one of the best i've ever had, and salad (which was alright). The chicken teriyaki was very moist but had a LOT of sauce on it but no big deal, it also came with rice, some kind of mayo/cauliflower/potato deal which was pretty tasty, and some veggies. The sashimi included 2 pieces of salmon, 3 pieces of tuna, and 2 pieces of whitefish. Sashimi was very good quality, and every piece melted in my mouth. Service here was very friendly, i was greeted very warmly when i walked in, and i had two waitresses come by to make sure my order had been taken. They left nothing left to be desired and i was perfectly happy with their attentive service. Overall, great place to come for lunch on your own or with a small group of people. Delicious food, cozy atmosphere, and top notch service. Doesn't get much better than that!

My father has always been one to discover small, really good restaurants. We got there incredibly late as we left during rush hour traffic and live in Orange County! The location is odd--in between a Papa John's Pizza and Ralphs. There is really not a sign that says "Kyala," so I had to walk up to it to make sure it was the right place. Dad made a point, "This is one of the few sushi places that has sushi actually made by a Japanese person!" Apparently it is a rare find these days. Anyway, dad already had some sashimi waiting for us when we got there. The Toro (fatty tuna) was really awesome. The Giant Clam was really fresh, but not particularly my favorite. We shared the Sukiyaki, definitely "A-OK" the udon noodles made it much better. The Seafood Dynamite was my favorite, which included small scallops in a sweet mayo-type sauce. I finished up that dish! My husband's favorite roll of the night was Dragon Roll (California Roll with Freshwater Eel with Avocado) and I would agree that it was the best. The service was pretty good, and they kept refills coming. Though they did mistake my hubby's lemonade with a sprite refill... but he didn't mind. If we lived in the Diamond Bar area, definitely would check out this place again. But for OC-ers, too far to go on a regular basis.

You'll see the "SUSHI" sign first, which is next to a Papa John's and a Ralph's = true hole in the wall style. Inside, clean, classy, intimate (tiny space, but not annoyingly cramped), and most important of all, excellent food! I'll admit, I'm not a fan of the sashimi and mostly go for the rolls--probably from many bad experiences with raw fish in other sushi places *cough* AKASAKA *cough* However, I was feeling adventurous and decided to give this place a chance and ordered the Nigiri Sushi deluxe, sort of a sampler of sashimi over rice with a tuna roll, miso soup, and salad. My order came and the moment I had my first bite, I became a born-again fan. Especially the salmon! Holy smokes! I never realized how good something that wasn't cooked would taste so wonderful. It melted in my mouth and tasted fresh and almost buttery. Not chewy or fishy tasting at all. I didn't want to swallow it for the longest time. Miso was good as was the salad. The dressing was different from other places, not as watery or mayo-like--thumbs up. My family ordered some udon, a dragon roll, and some combo teriyaki dishes. They seemed to enjoy it because everyone cleaned their plates. My grandma finished her plate. If she doesn't like something, she won't finish it, regardless if it's impolite or not. So the fact that she ate a whole lot more than she usually does means it was very good. So if anything, you can always trust the grandmother, and trust her judgment that this place is one to check out.

Good and simple Japanese food. Better than average. I didn't eat the Sushi so I can't comment on that but had the typical Teriyaki meal. My sister likes this place so we went. Clean, nice atmosphere, and great, friendly service.

YUMMY YUM YUM~ Sashimi salad and Teriyaki Beef(filet mignon) are my favorites! If you're sick of wanna-be sushi places, come to this place. It's owned by actual Japanese people! haha. Friendly service & fresh sushi!

Very good sashimi. The miso soup is good. Not very good prices. The service attitude is varied by your server. (from sub-par attitude to happy to see you) The beef is a bit below mediocre. The chicken is alright. The cheddar-mayonaise veggies they give you on the side is more looks than for eating. I for one do not eat it for health reasons, but even my less healthier friends have complained that it was too greasy. The seating is quite cramped, and you can hear almost anyone's conversations. Would have given it a four, but over time- I have had better sushi dining experiences. I have found the sashimi salad to be the best value for fish, but leaves you hungry hours later because there were no carbohydrates. I would come here again for the fish.

This place is probably one of my favorite home town joints; it's well priced and clean. It's small but still has a nice decor. The service attitude is average; it's usually friendly and the food is pretty average. For the price you're paying for it though it really could get better. I on average try to find time to go to kyala every couple of months with my family and it's really good if you're looking for a close by decent sushi joint. The outside of the store doesn't really have much to say but once you get inside it will be a nice experience.

I think I might have been the very first customer at Kyala some 7-8 (?) years ago. I actually walked in the night before their grand opening, when they had a private family and friends gathering. It was the closest sushi spot to my house back when I lived with my parents and for awhile, I ate there at least once a week, if not more. I was a sushi novice so I started with the usual scaredy-cat offerings like Crunchy Roll (still up there with the best) and spicy tuna roll. My one gripe that I know others probably love: The ginormous size of the rolls. I cannot fit one whole piece in my mouth without gagging. They're nearly the same circumference as tennis balls! But it's the basic lunch specials that shine the most. I love their tempura (perfectly crisp and airy) with chicken or beef teriyaki. Kyala is great for basic staples but not amazing by any means.

I grew up in Diamond Bar and this is my favorite sushi restaurant in the area. My usual is shrimp tempura, calamari salad, and hot udon just for starters. Every time I go I get new rolls each time but the last time I went I got a rainbow roll, dragon roll, and caterpillar roll. All were fantastic! Their miso soup is also great along with their albacore. I am not a huge albacore fan but when I tried it here I liked it and to this day is the only place I will eat albacore. For dessert I always end with their delicious mochi. I don't live in Diamond Bar anymore but whenever I visit home I always stop by. Last time I got take out and noticed that they remodeled and was very impressed with their new look!

I love this place, last year when I first moved to the LA area I started on a search for a sushi place nearby school. I went to litterally like 5 places and walking in and saying no thank you until I got here. The feel of this place is simple but neat. The service is fast and always friendly. I've tried several things in the past year, the udon is my favorite, the best i've ever had, their spicy salmon hand rolls are to die for. Also if you're a big fish fan get the sashimi salad, totally delicious. Also if you're short on cash and want some flavorful and cheap, get the crab miso, AMAZING it has so much flavor. great side to sushi. I come here about every 2 months, being a poor college student I can't afford to come here more, but if I could I would.

One of the best authentic sushi in town! The owner, a Japanese couple, Yoshi and Michiko are super nice and friendly. My husband haven't been there for a while and when he brought me there, they still remember him!!! They way Yoshi presents the sushi are the art of Japanese sushi and the taste is just DELISH. I don't mind spending a little more to get fresh sushi :)

While the overall quality of food was good (the miso broth was well prepared, salad & dressing was tasty), there was just too much sauce on all the dishes we tried. I had the baked scallop roll and the scallops were undercooked. Once they brought it back, it was a rather pleasant dish. Their combination dinners are also good for those with a larger appetite. Perhaps it might be better to ask for the sauce on the side or go easy on the sauce. The service was very friendly.

Top quality sushi, a delightful experience and somewhat of a surprise for the area. Restaurant staff incredibly kind and thoughtful. Generous portions - so very fresh and delicious. Several choices for lunch special. Calamari salad and fresh cut rolls (California and Spicy Tuna) were so good. If you're searching for sushi in the neighborhood, look no more - Enjoy!

This place is pretty small so if you happen to come for lunch, I suggest you call ahead for a reservation. I generally come here for lunch and their lunch specials are pretty affortable. You can choose from Terri salmon/chicken/beef/tempura and you can combine with california rolls or spicey tuna rolls. Their sashimi is always fresh and delish. My favorite is the tuna, yellow tail, and salmon. Staff is friendly and ready to serve. I've been there once for dinner and its much more pricey.

This place is super tiny, and if you passed by it, you wouldn't even give it a second glance. That is exactly what happened to me, after living in Diamond Bar for 17 years (non-consecutively), I finally went to eat at Kyala. It's pretty pricey for what looks like a hole-in-the-wall Japanese restaurant, but the portions are huge! I love fresh oysters, and at $4 for 2 fresh oysters, this place is definitely the best! Sooo delicious! I love their sushi rolls and their teriyaki items. During lunch time, its definitely difficult to get a table, the waitresses sort of zone out at times, but otherwise they're pretty nice. I say try the place, if you got a little cash to spend.

I decided to check this place out... because of all the good reviews. The sashimi was fresh and portions were perfect. The decor was so-so... but I had a great company. Made all the difference...

Kyala makes my top list of favorite restaurants of all time, and is my favorite local Japanese restaurant. Although it looks very hole-in-the-wall, this restaurant keeps both its dining and food prep areas extremely clean. The place may also be very small, but don't let this prevent you from eating here... I assure you that every minute spent waiting is worth it. I've tried almost everything on their menu, from simple entree salads (the Calamari Salad is my favorite) to complex sushi rolls (The Dragon Roll), and have yet to be disappointed. The service was superb, and the speed at which the food came out was perfect. Our food was brought out in standard Appetizer, Entree, Dessert order, but their timing was impeccable. Throughout the many times that I have been there, Appetizers were brought to the table promptly, Entrees came simultaneously so that the none of our party ever had to watch the others eat, and dessert was only brought when the entire table had been cleared of the meal's dishes. The food is not ridiculously overpriced, and is perfect for a casual date night or heavy lunch (Weekday lunch specials change daily). Drinkers rejoice, there is a wide selection of asian alcoholic beverages including sake, soju, and Japanese imported beers. No dress code is enforced, but casual datewear to business casual is recommended. Be cautious when looking for this restaurant: it's not marked too clearly, as it is only labeled SUSHI: JAPANESE CUISINE on its facade.

I love this place and find it to be consistently excellent. The thing I like about this place is Yoshi's artistic and creative twist on sushi. He and his wife are truly the most congenial and nicest people on the planet. They always remember my girlfriend and I by name, and the service is great. Yoshi even remembers what we like and don't like, so sitting at the Sushi Bar is perfect. I may not get there as often as I'd like to, but I will put this place on the top of my list of sushi restaurants.

  • Keith M.

The best restaurant in Diamond Bar (that's not saying much) and one of the best sushi restaurants that I have eaten at period. I have eaten sushi at many places throughout the US, Japan and, yes, even in Mexico (which was actually very good), but Kyala ranks in the top 5. If you need a restaurant with beautiful decor skip this restaurant. Personally, I don't need a place to look pretty to make their food taste better. Kyala is small, probably smaller than your average sushi restaurant, and since the food is good expect to wait. The food at the sushi bar and the dining area are first rate. Having eaten here many times Yoshi (owner/sushi chef) knows what I like and often serves dishes that are not on the menu. Often times these are traditional Japanese dishes that reminds me of my mom's cooking. Service is always attentive, but it does get busy so if you need something don't be afraid to speak up.

We had a dinner party for my wife's birthday here. The service was okay, but our food wasn't great. The rice was mushy, and they even used it in some of their sushi. Overall, the food was mediocre (we had everything from set meals that included grilled fish / sashimi, rolls, tempura, and sukiyaki -- it was not a great value or experience.

a pretty solid japanese restaurant. i've been here many times before (since it's so close to my house), and every entree i've tried so far has been pretty tasty. the only negatives(?) i would point out are: - a little on the pricier end - menu isn't particularly exciting. very basic.

  • Sandra P.

It's definitely the little things that sets this place apart from its many neighboring Japanese competitors. Husband & I had been trying to try this place for a while now but every-time we tried it was closed - kind of a turn off. On a random night without the tots we found it was open when two other sushi spots were closed, hah! We tried two rolls and one sushi order and they were good. Spicy tuna roll was really spicy & fresh! Spider roll was good but somewhat big & messy. I was pleasantly surprised by the complimentary yellow tail roll that we were given on the house! The gesture was a nice touch & complimented the meal were already enjoying. The house dessert of sliced pineapple and chocolate dipped strawberries finished off a meal of attentive service & served to highlight the tasty and well presented food. Again, those little things are missing in a lot of other places & I wanted to highlight that for those that think that Kyala is not that special. Well, Kyala is special, it really is because service still matters. ps... Yes! They will be redoing their 90's inspired red/black Asian decor but will sadly be closed during the remodel. Hopefully they'll be back with a fab redo to match their fabulous service.

I'm just getting into the sushi thing but boy was I impressed with this place. I work just a few doors down and tried this place out for lunch. The Alaskan Salmon roll was awesome and the service was great. Prices were ok for the lunch specials. I decided to come here for their happy hour specials and man was I surprised at the deals. If you are looking for a good deal on drinks with a friend or two, this is the spot. Keep in mind this place is really small and may not be the place to take a group of people to drink, but a friend or two would work. The drinks and appetizers were 50% off Tue, Wed, and Thur. Two large Kirine beers and a large sake (which made a total of 6 sake bombs) was only 10 bucks after tax. What a steal! This will always be my go to place after work when I need a drink. QUICK NOTE: they are going to be closed for a week or two at the end of march for a remodel. I'm hoping they make the place just a bit bigger because they have a good thing going that can be great!

The food here is just perfect. The presentation, texture, and the taste just blew my mind away. I ordered a Donkatsu sashimi combo and it was just perfect. The breading was crisp and golden while the meat was so juicy and tender. The sashimi was also very fresh and and plated beautifully on top of grated radish. Go here for legit japanese food

came during lunch to celebrate a coworkers birthday. ordered the 2 combo lunch w salmon shioyaki &beef teriyaki. loved the beef teriyaki, tender and flavorful. oh and they brought a platter of mochi ice cream &strawberries for the birthday girl which was more than enough to share among 8 people.

Yummo!!! Thanks fellow Yelpers, you didn't let me down with this one. Another business dinner in an area I knew nothing about, second time in a row I have impressed those that live local and didn't know about the place. (before you say anything, I always give Yelp credit) Greeted friendly and instantly served, asked for what they recommended and they didn't give us $20 rolls and were not pushy. Oyster shooter with quail egg, masago and sake....Cheers!!!

This place is amazing. They offer a wide variety of traditional Japanese dishes, particular in the appetizer section of their menu. They also have these really nice special dishes for happy hour, which are meant to be eaten while chatting and drinking. I've been going to Kyala with my family since they opened somewhere around ten years ago. The customer service is fantastic and the owners Yoshi and Michiko are very warm and sweet towards their customers.

This is one of my favorite Japanese Restaurants close to campus (Cal Poly Pomona). This place is always packed, so you might want to make reservations before hand. Not really the ideal place to go and eat if you have more than 6 people in your party. The food is great (I always get their Saba Shioyaki with Unagi, Saba, Hamachi, or Tekka Maki... depending on my mood and how much I feel like spending. They have authentic food... though some are questionable. Staff is nice. Prices are somewhat high, but the food is so worth it in the end.

This is my benchmark for sushi. I usually don't find too many places that can compare but there are a handful. The fish is amazing here. My "go-to" meal would be the Rainbow Roll with a side of Toro Sashimi. If you get a seat at the bar sit next to Yoshi.

I have been going to this sushi place since I was in kindergarden. At first I would only eat California Rolls, now I eat a variety of sashimi. On fridays my family and I go here for a nice family dinner, since we are so busy during the week and do not have a lot of time to actually sit down and talk to eachother. We have been going here so long that when we walk in, most of the staff will recogonize us and remember our orders. Since my school is a lot closer to this restaraunt, when we have early days from school I will take my friends here for lunch. All in all I love this restaraunt, and I hope it never goes away.

It's the small Japanese restaurants in unsuspecting locations that are often the best. Kyala is one of the best Japanese restaurants in the area. I've been going here for years since it first opened. The owner, Michiko, is so sweet! I see her every time I eat here and she's such a delight to talk to. My parents have come to know her over the years, and it's so nice to feel so welcomed whenever we eat here. Kyala has some great salads and appetizers that make this restaurant stand out from others. Also, the sashimi here is excellent. Great quality and generous portions. If you order any combination with sashimi, it's definitely a good deal. You basically can't go wrong with the fish here. The lunch menu has some great offerings that aren't on the dinner menu, such as the mini udon and teri don combinations. The restaurant is really small and is always busy, but I've never seen it so busy that I've had to wait for a table. I would wait if I had to because it's worth it. I love you, Kyala!

Tuesday dinner. Complementary bowl of miso soup with salmon - contained tons of bones. Almost died, but nice gesture :] Tempura - heavy on the batter, not flaky, bland. California roll - heavy on rice, but big. Think Costco sushi. Udon - generic. Skewed pork belly appetizer - undelightful. Drink refills - refills only halfway. STINGY. Hamachi kama - ordered, but the server forgot to place the order. She was nice though. Overpriced. Went to Ralph's next door to buy Haagen-Dazs green tea ice cream to make up for the horrible meal.

This is definitely one of the better Japanese restaurants in Diamond Bar, with Japanese owners. Their dinner prices are a little steep but lunch is very reasonable. They are also known for large slices of fresh sushi. I also love their onion based salad dressing! They close on Mondays and aren't open for lunch on weekends

This place is down the street from my house, literally a five minute drive... it's very average but the quality isn't bad. Even though it's close to my house, I'd probably drive an extra 10 minutes to someplace better.

I very much enjoy the food at the restaurant. In the last 5 years or so I've probably eaten here over 100 times, in large part due to Hama, the chef at the sushi bar. He is very friendly and I often tell him to make me whatever he feels like at the moment and he always delivers something unique and delicious. The fish is always fresh and the service is terrific. The reason I knocked off one star is because Hama has recently returned to Japan, I feel as though the beating heart of one of my favorite restaurants is gone. Although the food is still great my connection with this place isn't the same. I'll still continue to eat here, and would encourage everyone else to do the same.

Updated: Reducing the stars to keep this place to myself. One of my favorite sushi places. I went here numerous, numerous times. Small Japanese restaurant tucked away in the heart of Diamond Bar; next to Papa John's Pizza and Ralphs supermarket. The portions are just right, the price is right. The servers are attentive when needed. If you're a sushi lover and price is a concern, you have found the place.

This isn't Urasawa nor Sushi Sasabune. But, for a regular Japanese restaurant, this is as good as it gets. Kyala offers a wide array of classic japanese fare--pretty much all that you would expect from a sushi/Japanese restaurant. The food is consistently good, and the sushi is dependably fresh. Unlike other so-called Japanese restaurants in the area, food at Kyala is prepared with the touch and ingredients of traditional Japanese-American restaurants. Michiko and Yoshi are super hospitable and friendly, and even made special ozoni (Japanese New Year's soup) for us. One caveat: this place is tiny, and if the place is busy (e.g., lunch), then service can be slow. This is definitely my favorite Japanese restaurant in the area, and I'm Japanese.

I live in CH and had never been to Kyala until couple of years ago. Yoshi and Michiko are super friendly, as well as the staff. Very fresh fish and very delicious fried oysters. Must try are the albacore spinach and the crispy rice cake with negi-toro. The hotate (giant scallop) is very good too. The halibut with spicy jalapeno paste is good as well. Not too much of an ambiance and it is located in a strip mall next to Ralph.

A small cozy Japanese / Sushi restaurant in a Diamond Bar. We went on a Thursday night, and the restaurant was getting packed. There were only three servers attending that night, and the services were a bit on the slow side. But once our food was on the table, it was worth the wait. The sushi cuts were very nicely done, and the Hamachi was outstanding. A little pricey, but is the right price for the quality of the food they serve. Will definitely recommend others who crave for freshly prepared sushi and Japanese cuisine.

3.5 stars. i lived in db all my life and didn't even know this tiny joint existed (to be fair, although it's right next to the ralphs, it's really really tiny and hidden behind BLACK windows). apparently it's been there for 9 years!!! anyways i decided to give it a try after my friend's wife (who's a sushi maniac) told me that there's a decent sushi joint she found in db. and told me of a $40omakase. hmmm. omakase for $40? why not. i went with my mom and we promptly sat at the bar around 640pm. the chef was very nice and friendly...albeit a bit too soft spoken. the wait staff was attentive and friendly also. so we start of with a decent tuna tartare and just go straight into nigiris (tuna, japanese mackerel, cho toro, uni, sweet shrimp, yellow tail, red snapper, japanese scallop etc etc i don't really remember all). but total i think we had about 12 or 13 courses (including the obligatory fruit dessert). mostly the sushi was fairly good (some were very good like the japanese mackerel and scallops). some definitely could've been better (like the yellowtail which tasted a bit dry and lacking its trademark sweet oily taste). the damage came out to be $135 for two of us. so much for $40 omakase (i guess my friend's wife doesn't eat a lot), but still not bad. overall i liked the place. it's definitely no sasabune or nozawa, but it's a decent place to go for a 5 min drive.

This is another restaurant I get food from once a month or so for take out. In the Walnut/Diamond Bar area, I don't think I've had better sushi. The pieces of fish are generously cut and consistently fresh and delicious. The baked salmon rolls are pretty good too. The price is on the higher end but I think it's worth it. The wait can be hit or miss. I've waited over 30 min for my rake out order before when the person taking the order said it would be 15 to 20 min. But I never make a fuss out of it because the food is worth it.

My in-laws discovered this place. The sushi is decent here, but I really don't think it's anything special either. I've had much fresher sushi at other places before, such as Kiyono and Katsuya in LA (my two favorite places). Nonetheless, it gets the job done and the price is fairly decent. I think between 4 people, we managed to spend less than $100 for some hand rolls and sashimi for lunch. Nice little authentic, quaint restaurant with limited seating, but overall pretty cute and not bad for sushi in the DB area!

First time here, and not too impressed. The sushi was good and fresh , and my rice bowl was big , but it was 90% rice. We also had some chicken, which was not a good idea, undercooked and skimpy. It is fairly pricy for how much they fancy themselves.

My boyfriend took me here for sushi the night before he had to leave for college. We had a lovely dinner here, and even romantic with the dim lighting. I ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll, which is my favorite thing to try at all sushi restaurants. This place was just normal, nothing crazy special. He ordered the combo, with chicken teriyaki. Sweet yet tender, a good balance. The staff is very friendly. They have weird decorations on the walls, which I thought was just peeled paint. They are closed on Mondays.

We visit this place once in a great while when we're in the mood for Japanese food. This place is just "Okay" in my opinion. I've definitely had better. The service is like a box of chocolates. You never know what type you're going to get. Sometimes the servers are extremely friendly and sometimes they are just so-so and one time the young lady was just over the top rude. The last time we were there I was highly disappointed because they open at 11:30am and we thought they opened at 11:00am. Regardless the front door was wide opened and we walked in at around 11:20. At that point we were asked to wait outside until they opened at 11:30. I've been to other places a few minutes before opening time and they would seat me and/or at least let me wait inside. I thought that was a bit rude of them so we left and walked a few doors down and ate at a Chinese restaurant instead. (Wouldn't go back to that Chinese restaurant either) Since then I haven't been back to this place. I'm not saying that I will never go back, but I don't think I'll be visiting them again anytime soon.

Definitely as good as it gets when considering fresh Sashimi. I highly recommend sitting at the sushi bar and letting Chef Yoshi entertain your palate. The fish is definitely fresh and specials change daily with whatever Chef Yoshi gets from the market that day. He also treats his guests to little amuses that he creates, whether it be a seared tuna or his potato chips, it is wonderful. Ask for some green tea salt. The place is usually packed but service is great. They are attentive and really kind. Great hospitality. Husband and wife owned restaurant, they are wonderful people that also love food and chef is continuously trying out new recipes.

thanks, yelp reviewers for recommending this place. i love that it is a hole in the wall and would never have found it if it weren't for this web site. my husband and i were on a rare date night. he came for the sushi and i came to sample their menu to get a feel for the place. fresh fish and friendly service. my favorites were the fresh oysters and yellow tail collar -- melt in your mouth goodness! the spicy tuna shishito were ok, i think maybe better if they were just a little more spicy: it's spicy tuna in jalapeno-like pepper halves. i will check out their dinner plates on our next visit.

Kyala is hidden next to a Ralph's store, it has a tiny sign you can easily miss, but behind this unassuming front is a great sushi restaurant. Service is very friendly, the waiters and chef try their best to make you feel welcomed. I discovered this place as I was craving for some sushi but did not want to drive far from Diamond Bar. The prices are very good for the quality of the food. You can really tell the chef takes his time in preparing each dish. Their Toro are amazing (but it is really hard to mess up Toro). The Unagi is just perfect the Unagi sauce kind of caramelizes on the edges of the eel absolutely delicious. The rolls are very good although they cut them a little bit bigger than most places but the taste is great. I especially like their scallop rolls they use a huge amount of excellent scallops in those, just love it.

Good lunch specials. Newly renovated and it's much brighter and looks bigger. Lunch specials are always good here. Don't expect the owner to ever give you a discount, even if they mess up. We went for lunch and my friend ordered the vegetable udon. When the noodles arrived, he noted that the veggies were burnt and the soup had the taste of burnt veggies. When he called the owner over to let her know, she said she was sorry but can't he just remove the burnt vegetables and eat the rest. He explained that the soup tasted horrible. She said that they could make him another, but he would have to wait another 15-20 minutes. He said it was ok, he would wait. When they finally brought the new udon out, he dug in and had a puzzled look on his face. All he got this time was vegetables in broth with NO UDON! Ok, so we called the owner over again. She apologized and took the bowl back and then brought it back with noodles. Most other places would offer his meal on the house for the inconvenience and mistakes they had made. Not here! Customer service like this is why I didn't give it 5 stars. Two strikes against Kayala. Obviously not my first choice of Japanese restaurants!

For years, Kyala has established its reputation in the nearby area as THE place to get fresh sushi. Owned by a Japanese family, these guys know how to do sushi, and do it well. The place is in a shopping plaza, and size is suitable for up to parties of 10 in my opinion. There is decor, although nothing fancy: simple but not simplistic. This isn't a fancy LA joint, but that isn't what made this place the best-in-area. Sushi, sashimi, rolls, the chef here really knows what he's doing. He has a very creative eye, and presentation is excellent. Tastes are fresh, and I often find myself surprised at new takes on classic dishes. If you ask him (bar seating), he'll take the reigns in terms of ordering and really take you on a culinary trip. Toro is outstanding, their deep-friend rainbow roll is divine. Add some beer, and you're good to go. I highly recommend this place--it ranks among the best in my book in terms of food quality and service. ---------- +: best in local, best for miles +: excellent service and humility +: actually owned by a Japanese family -: don't go if you're expecting a lavish corporate sell-out joint

Being going there for years. Sashimi and sushi are always fresh. Never had a bad meal there. Try their fresh raw oysters, you won't regret it. The place is not that big, so try to arrive there a little early on weekends. The kids menu has a generous portion and the combination dinners are a good value. Tried the lunch specials there before, and the food is just as good, but a better value. Michiko (the owner) is very sweet lady and she remembers regular customers.

Best Japanese place in all of diamond bar. The sushi is fresh MOST of the time and the salad they serve is the only time i ever get my vegetable fix. I also find it refreshing to find a sushi restaurant owned by an authentic Japanese person. The worst is having a korean, chinese or mexican (gasp) sushi chef greet you in japanese....

  • Steven C.

The outside looks mundane and cheap. i don't understand why decent japanese restaurants in the area don't make an effort to represent the quality of their restaurant w/ the storefront appearance. i guess locals just know wats up. i found out about kyala thru yelp but when i drove past it, was discouraged from eating there. i recently was forced to eat here and thought it was going to be a cheap experience but it turned out to be a semi-classy place. wat surprises me time and time again is when a jap restaurant is actually under jap management, which this place seemed to be. i had sea bass and fried oysters. sea bass was ok, pricey for the quantity but tasted good. the oysters sucked, but then i havent been to a single place that has good fried oysters in this area so i guess they would be considered average. the ikura seemed decent. tempura was standard. service was decent. would come again, esp since they gave me a $5 coupon for the next visit. 3/5 stars

Excellent, especially for a very humble location right next to Ralphs. The sushi selection is extensive, the quality is good, the service is excellent, and the space is tight. Not "tight" as in cool, but tight as in there's not a lot of room.

I've been coming here for years. Best Japaneses restaurant around the area. Come early or come late to avoid the crowd. My favorites are the miso seabass and sashimi salad.

Authentic and quality Japanese food in an intimate environment and in Diamond Bar! The restaurant is quite and can be very busy for dinner. Have enjoyed every visit!

I wasn't expecting much from this place that was right next to a Papa Johns and Ralphs but good to be proved wrong. It's literally a hole in the wall, probably invisible and missed by some. Kyala is a small cozy spot in Diamond Bar. I was impressed by their sushi and prices (decent). I'd come back here again. Even their salad, miso horny soup, teriyaki chicken and tempura dish were good. Good service. Spicy scallops were great! Yay for sushi...

I love this place! My family and I have been going here for years. It's a small "hole in the wall" type with some of the freshest fish I have ever had. The sushi chefs are really friendly and so is the owner. You can normally expect to wait since the place is small and gets crowded early. The only bad thing about this restaurant is that they are not open on Mondays...

Cozy little Japanese restaurant. I always get the tempura udon. That is so satisfying. It comes with decent California rolls, but kind of heavy on the rice. Try the fried chicken appetizer, I think it's called the karage chicken, but it's the only chicken appetizer. It's lightly fried and doused with a flavorful sauce and sprinkled with green onions.

I'm usually not a sushi fanatic but I can admit that I love my japanese food but kyala didNOT disappoint. I've always come here during lunch hours but recently I came in on a saturday night with my mom and it was delicious. WE ordered a combo dinner of tempura and sushi which included 4 California rolls, white fish, spicy tuna, and some other type of fish. did i also mention that the dinner included a salad and miso soup? delicious. To finish the order my mom and I decided to go for a roll and by recomendation of the waitress we ordered a Philadelphia roll with scallops, apparently its a new dish and was totally awesome! The only down side about the whole experience was the waitress forgot to bring out a spoon for the miso soup but after tasting the food, it was an extremely minor detail.

I am usually not a big fan of Japanese food but I am a big fan of sushi. Anyhoo, they have a very good calamari salad. Their specials are really good also. If you can't decide what to get they have these combos that have a little of everything on the menu. I am really finicky about my sushi so to play it safe I have only tried the California rolls here (yes, this is not sushi but it's the closest thing to sushi I had here). It's a small place but the food is good you won't even care about the size of the place. Really nice staff too.

This place rivals Sushi Rokuan in Chino Hills as my regular sushi restaurant. Sashimi - always fresh. Great salmon and tuna. Agedashi Tofu - must-have. battered pieces of tofu in a bonito broff with enoki and shitaki mushrooms. Spicy [insert seafood here] roll - fresh and tasty, but the sauce is a little too spicy. Terriyaki Salmon - just as good as Rokuan's. melt-in-your-mouth goodness. Salad dressing - pretty much the best you can get in a Japanese restaurant. I'm not sure what they put in it, but it's this tangy, soy vinegarette - so good, and really livens up a bland salad

Just visited this place with my husband a week ago from a friend's recomm. I was a bit disappointed when I walked in because the place is so.....small and no privacy. We were about one foot away from the next table, we pretty much hear neighbor's conversation. After going through the menu, I thought the price was a bit too high for the place's impression. However, after the food was served, I knew why. The combo ($17/person), in my opinion, was pricey. The sushi we ordered was pretty good. I think the combo probably not worth the money we spent. If the place can be more comfortable and better remodeled, I would give it a "5 start". I will go back to try other stuff during the week days when they are not so busy.

been here few times already, and happy with the food every time. service is great, and chef knows exactly what you want if you sit at the sushi bar. fish is fresh and colorful, and the portion is plentiful (for me). definitely recommended if you're looking for good eat. btw, look for the "Sushi" sign right next to Ralphs, since they don't have a sign of Kyala outside.

We usually go have sushi on Friday nights. Kyala is our #1 choice. The restaurant is small but the service is great. I love the miso soup and their salad. Whenever we try a new sushi restaurant, we always compare it to our standard - Kyala.

This little whole in the wall is very good actually. Right next to Ralph's on Diamond Bar Blvd+Grand Ave, you would have never expected to find a good japanese restaurant there. The fish is always fresh, service is good, and the portions are decent, not generous. The lunch combo is worth the price because it comes with eight pieces of sushi and/or sashimi--your choice, entree, salad, and soup. You won't find this price anywhere else especially with eight pieces of sushi/sashimi. They always maintain the excellent quality that it is known for and the sushi bar chefs are quite friendly. Other people may say this comes in second to Sushi Koyo--but this is actually number one compared to other ones in the Diamond Bar/Rowland Heights/Walnut/West Covina area. Other people may complain this place is a little too expensive, but its better priced than other places (ie Jubei on Lemon+Golden Springs). Oh yeah--this is another authentic japanese family owned restaurant =]

Went here after Yelp's 4 star rating. A friend and I shared the Sushi and Nigiri plate and a Spider roll. The nigiri was fresh and tasty and the California rolls were bland and uninteresting as most usually are. The salad that came with the plate was made with iceberg lettuce and had a funky tasting sweet dressing that was borderline ineditable. Of course, salad is not their specialty, but why serve something if it's not even good? The soft-shelled crab roll had good flavors, but was way too big. Each roll was about 3" in diameter and was difficult to eat in one bite without looking like an idiot. Overall, I would not eat here again.

I've been here twice for lunch. The first time I thought it was a bit pricey but the food was fine. The second time the sushi chef dropped the bamboo mat (for making rolls) on the ground. He picked it up and put it back on the prep counter and used it. Did not even rinse it off. I don't like to give bad reviews, but seriously, this is a forum for information and frankly I won't be back.

Been coming here for a while when I want real japanese cooking n fresh sushi. They are pretty consistent with quality and lunch specials are have decent portions for the price. Love pork Katsu but they also can do steak Katsu upon request. Pretty small shop but feels like your somewhere else when you sit there

Pretty good sushi if you're a baller. $14 for yellowtail sashimi. Five pieces. But they were delicious. Some of the freshest and tastiest I've had. This is a legit Japanese run sushi restaurant. The chirashi bowl is just okay - I've had better. To be quite frank. I've been spoiled by cheap poke bowls from stores like pokinometry and so I was expecting the chirashi to blow it out of the water. It didn't. However, the sushi was still fresh and delicious. If you go her, get the sushi!

Small Japanese restaurant that probably fits 50 located next to Walmart. Dinner combination (two entrees) served with miso soup, salad, and rice. Chicken Katsu & Salmon Teriyaki (16) - The fried chicken cutlet was fried perfectly!! Not overly greasy. As for the salmon, I've always enjoyed it everytime I've had it. yelp.com/biz_photos/kyal… Fried Chicken & White fish w/ Miso (16) - Fried chicken tastes good but I felt it was missing something, so I asked for teriyaki sauce on the side for a dip. The white fish w/ miso was only okay - I probably wouldn't order this again. yelp.com/biz_photos/kyal… A bit pricy for dinner combination, but my friend and I both couldn't finish our dinners. Solid Japanese food!

A Japanese owned sushi restaurant, which is rare to see in this area. I'm a bit shocked at the quality here and surprised at the good ratings. Maybe today was an off day.... We ordered to go for Mother's Day dinner and I stopped eating after three pieces. There was something wrong with the rice and it didn't taste fresh. I ordered the baked langoustine and I stopped eating it in fear that I will get sick. I also ordered the spicy tuna and that one seemed odd, too. My sister who ordered the crunchy roll said the rice tasted funky, too. My mom and grandma was saying that there was too much vinegar in the rice. Ugh! I felt bad my mom was eating crappy sushi, which was way over priced. 6 rolls and salmon sashimi cost $100. All I got was a bad after taste.

Came here for their lunch special twice. I got the tempura + sushi/sashimi. Their lunch special comes with a small salad, miso soup, and rice. The tempura serving is a pretty good size with 2-3 pieces of shrimp, not too oily tasting and very crispy. Their sashimi is well plated, and has about 2 slices of 3 different fish, I unfortunately found one of the fish to be slightly chewier, it wasn't memorable as far as sashimi goes. The choice with lunch is 4 pieces California roll, 1 shrimp, 1 tuna and 1 salmon. I preferred it to the sashimi. Service was a little on the slow side. I eat a little slow and felt like they were kind of in a rush and presented me with my check before I requested it. Overall, it's a nice place to go for lunch, but I don't really crave anything from them. Maybe I'll be back.

This place got a nice remodel last year and I have been coming here for almost 7 years now! Me and my friend used to come here every week after school on Wednesday just to eat and catch up. Everything in general is very good. I really enjoy the appetizers and all the little things. However my favorite is their sashimi salad and crunchy rice with spicy salmon or tuna still. The rice is crunchy yet chewy on the inside and the flavor of the fish on top goes perfect with it. Keep in mind everything here is more fined tuned so you'll be paying slighty more expensive and nicely sized portions most of us may be used to. Probably the portions we should be eating vs what we are eating! Definitely quality over quantity here. So be prepared to spend a little more if you like to be super full. I also forgot to mention they have happy hour menu as well now!

After 25 visits accounted for on Yelp but really even dozens more of visits here over the last 14 years, Kyala has come to be a favorite spot of ours for reliable Japanese food. It's clean and somewhat modern looking, service is efficient, and it has become our standard which we compare other sushi spots to. I admit I don't eat a lot of raw sushi, I'm more of Japanese cooked food and cut sushi roll gal, but my other family members have found their sashimi and sushi to be of good quality. I LOVE their white ginger, it is so much tastier that the pink stuff out there. Some of our family favorites include the sashimi or sushi plates, unagi, shrimp tempura roll and spider roll, salmon and tuna sushi or sashimi. The tuna tempura with shisho leaf is also really nice. Kyala has nice menu with appetizers many a la carte items but also a great selection of combination 1-2 item lunch specials which are a superb value starting at around $12-$13 for lunch. The lunch or dinner (dinner is more $$) specials come with miso soup, a nice cold and always fresh mixed green salad. I love that the salad is not iceburg, it comes with very fresh and lovely dark mixed greens topped with shredded carrot, shredded red cabbage, a thinly sliced radish and house made ginger dressing which has some nice texture to it, it may be the ginger but its not just a liquid based dressing. Lately one of my favorite lunches has been their chicken cutlet and California roll combination. The chicken cutlet is panko breaded, fried but not greasy, sliced, and it comes with 2 generous white meat cutlets, a small ramekin order of potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower baked with Japanese mayo sauce, and rice. The dish comes with a house made plum bbq sauce but I prefer their house made eel sauce instead. The lunch is filling and I can barely finish it and usually share some of it with other dining companions. Other popular cooked items include their teriyaki, udon, and tempura.Their complimentary hot green tea stays hot in their nice thick walled mugs and is very good. Overall a great bet for a Japanese lunch or dinner, lunch till 2:30 pm and then they close and reopen at 5 pm for dinner. They also have a great happy hour menu from 5 pm-6pm on weekdays and they are closed Monday all day and closed Sunday for lunch.

For the location, this place is decent... but it's definitely on the bottom of the list for best sushi places I've been to. The price and decent food earn this place two stars, no more. I say this because the sushi was meh and the sushi rice was overcooked!! C'mon, the rice is the FOUNDATION that the Sushi needs to shine! Overall, I'm sure this is a decent place for Diamond Bar, but you can find better by venturing out a few miles out.

I came here previously for dinner with a group of friends and wasn't too impressed with the slow service and chewy sashimi. The oysters were big, fresh and delicious! I came here today with some coworkers for lunch. It was bustlin'! They have pretty good lunch specials. They have combos, kind of like bento boxes, with several choices you can mix and match. I had the sashimi and crispy sesame chicken. Combos come with a side salad, miso soup, and white rice. Everything for $10! Some of the choices, like the sashimi, is an extra dollar. The sashimi was a a mix of tuna, salmon, and I think yellow tail. Sliced thinly and melted in my mouth like butter! The crispy sesame chicken wasn't really crispy and didn't have much flavor. It needed some oomph, like salt or a light sauce. The service was as good as it could be for a busy lunch. I think this place is popular for their amazingly priced lunch combos! Shrimp tempura roll (crunchy style) was very crunchy but didn't amaze me. If I came here again, I would stick with the sashimi and skip the other food items. It's pretty pricey for dinner from what I remember. Lunch is much more doable!

They're actually Japanese...not Korean, not Taiwanese... The sushi here is super fresh, price is decent and the service is good. I love this place because they are very authentic, they do not carry any specialty rolls like spiderman roll, las vegas roll, or any novelty rolls that cater more towards Americanized Japanese eatery. Their gobo chips are a must, they are a deep fried gobo root appetizer that tastes just like potato chips. I also love their ankimo, usually very fresh drenched in ponzu sauce and green onions on top. Big fan of their sashimi salad. I usually order nigiri because you get the best cut of the fish. Great service, I've been here over 10 times and I've seriously have never been disappointed. I think this place is family owned. Very happy with this local sushi place. Very authentic and affordable.

I really wanted to like this place, the staff is friendly, service was good but the food did not WOW me. After we were done with dinner and had paid a fingernail-sized cockroach crawled across our table. We made the waitress aware of it, she ran to the back and the owner came out to crush it. They apologized, we expected more than that. Needless to say, the whole experience ruined our dinner. That's too bad because I like mom and pop spots like this one.

I'm quite surprised this place has 4 stars. First of all, this place is pretty pricey. For a decent meal, you'll be spending at least $13+ for dinner. The service was okay - servers and waiters were very friendly, however they left my water empty for 15 minutes. It didn't seem like they checked very often even though it was a small restaurant. The food was okay to good. I ordered the dinner combo sashimi and beef teriyaki. It says their beef teriyaki is made from filet mignon, that's really impressive and it was very tender and lean. However, the beef had too much of a beefy taste. It's almost as if I'm eating a STEAK teriyaki because of the blood flavor. If they had sliced the beef much thinner like 3-4mm instead of a 10mm chunk, it would have been perfect. Salmon sashimi was decent. It was good, not too much stinky fish flavor. Not the best either. Their salad is good and miso soup is decent. What I couldn't understand was their side veggie dish. It was straight up terrible. It is literally a broccoli, cauliflower and potato baked with Japanese mayonnaise on top. It was a glob of nastyness. My sister got an unagi bowl - which she thought was delicious. Other people got nabeyaki udon which was pretty good too. Overall, It's a convenient place if you're in DB and it's good enough for a meal.

This is my all-time favorite Japanese place to go to in Diamond Bar (and its surrounding areas). The sashimi and sushi are fresh, the service is excellent, and the ambiance is very soothing/comfortable. The owners are a husband and wife duo and both contribute greatly to my loyalty as a customer for the past 10 or so years.

My in-laws brought us here to eat here for dinner. I was happy with the service, the iced green tea, and the food here. Atmosphere was casual, harmonious and the noise level was low. The restaurant was very clean. The sushi I had here left me wanting to return. The miso soup they serve is very good. I can see us coming back here some other weekend.

Kyala is located down the street from my house, so I have been frequenting this place for about 9-10 years. Consistently GREAT food and service throughout the years I've been here. The restaurant has never changed hands and is still owned and run by the same sweet Japanese owners, Michiko and Yoshi. Yoshi is the head sushi chef and Michiko waitresses at the restaurant. Very genuine and nice people indeed. I've tried these items and frequently order either a few or one of these: - Beef teriyaki and sashimi combination - Very tender beef & scrumptious sashimi - Salmon sashimi - Yellowtail sashimi - Unagi sushi - 2 pieces of Fresh Oyster (1 order) - Dragon cut roll - Spicy salmon cut roll - Uni sushi - Sweet shrimp sushi - Albacore sushi Tip: Their individual sashimi orders usually come with 5 pieces, but you can request more or less and the price per piece will adjust accordingly & fairly. For example, if you want a variety of specific types of sashimi, you can order 3 pieces of salmon, 2 pieces of yellowtail, and 3 pieces of tuna instead of having to order the standard 5 pieces of each type of sashimi. Overall, this place has great, quality food for very decent prices. The sashimi and sushi are always fresh and well portioned. The restaurant is nicely decorated with modernized upgrades, but because of how crowded this place gets, the environment can become overstimulating and you may feel a bit claustrophobic at times. Some seating areas are too close together, so hopefully you can get one of the more isolated tables or just sit at the sushi bar. I've never had a dissatisfying meal here....ever!! I highly recommend you come for the fresh sashimi and sushi!

Good food here. The sushi was very fresh and the sushi rice had a really good flavor. They hit it on the mark with the taste and quality. Also if you like fresh wasabi and not the powdered mixed kind then they have it here! This place is a four star for food, but I deducted a star for service. Servers weren't attentive and I had to ask for the check three times. I wasn't in a hurry, but I can imagine someone on their hour lunch getting upset. Would I come back? Sure, but I'd make sure I wasn't in a hurry.

Waited 40 minutes for a chirashi bowl and deluxe sushi. Asked waitress to check on our order. 10 mins later bowl arrived with semi fresh sushi and poorly mixed sushi rice... i almost thought they had served me regular rice until i tasted a clump of soggy rice with vinegar. The tuna was sinewy and the color a dull red. The tamago looked like it was 3 days old, dense and wrinkly with a charred piece of something in the middle. No uni or ikura, 2 tiny salmon slices, 4 sad pieces of tuna, one yellowtail, a sad soggy octopus slice, one strangely chewy grouper. The octopus was soggy and overly chewy like it had been defrosted. Not worth the $19 and $20 for the sushi or the wait.

  • Kelley L.

Not the best sushi I have ever had in my life, but I still love this place. It really is down the hill/street from my family's new place, the fish is fresh, the prices are decent, the staff is nice, and I have no complaint about parking. It is most crowded during lunchtime, but the wait is still not too bad. My favourite things to order: - chirashi: it has all the different types of sashimi you could possibly want in a meal, along with octopus and egg. I also love that they add lemon slices, mushroom, and cucumbers, yum! - sashimi: any, or all of it! Fresh fish slices and just the right thickness. The service here is also really good! The waitresses are very friendly and quick. I also love that they have to-go options if you do not feel like dining in.

My family and I have been going here for well over a decade. The fish is fresh and good. They don't do anything overly fancy with their rolls, they keep them traditional which personally I enjoy. Not in Highschool anymore so I come here when I see family in Diamond Bar. Our favorites: Toro (expensive, but worth every bite - its like butter) Spider Roll Calamari (appetizer and salad) Seared Albacore Quail egg shooters Spicy scallop hand roll (the Best, other places just dont do it like they do) Chicken Katsu Rainbow Roll And sashimi obviously. Yum yum. 5 Stars for food, but unfortunately 3 stars for service - Unless you're sitting at the bar with Yoshi.

Delicious salmon (sashimi was BOMB). Friendly workers. Really clean! I wouldn't suggest getting the beef though.

Very cozy spot to have a nice lunch with a friend or two. This place is small so i wouldn't recommend a big group. We stumbled upon this place while I was yelping, of course. We just finished our massage at Massage Envy across the other plaza. Kyala wins today! They have nice lunch combo similar to bento boxes but presentation is more Americanized. Main entree, soup, salad. Good lunch menu.

I came here with my family for a nice dinner and it lived up to my expectations. Even my grandparents (who are full Japanese) were very impressed with the quality and appearance of the food. I ordered the teriyaki salmon combo with sushi and was impressed with what I ordered. I don't remember what everyone else ordered but everyone left full and happy. The owners are real Japanese people and really do care about their quality. I look forward to my next trip back.

I've only came here twice, but both times I was slightly disappointed. I would not get their sashimi whatsoever. It's very fishy and not fresh. The items I recently ordered were... Miso sea bass - I think it was deep fried. It was pretty good but very greasy Crunchy roll - not bad, but not the best. I would say it's below average Salmon avocado roll - good, can't complain Chawanmushi - dericious Spicy tuna cut roll - very fishy and gross. We had to ask our waitress to take it back Overall. I would rate the food 3 stars but the service 5 stars. The young girl was so nice, even after we returned our spicy tuna roll. Very attentive. She also reminds me of an Asian Jennifer Lawrence. And who doesn't love Jennifer Lawrence!!

I don't get the reviews. We used to come all the time and the fish started smelling fishier and became softer with every visit. A year later, we decided to give it another shot. Decor has been updated and looks great. Service is always with a smile and very attentive. The salmon and amberjack nigiri had a slightly soft texture. If raw fish could wilt, it was wilted. The mochiko chicken was slightly dry and over fried. A bit disappointing and we'll have to find another spot nearby for our sushi fix.

I had heard great things about this place so I ordered a Salmon roll to go. When I opened up the box the Salmon was dry. I put the sauce on and ate it because I was starving. Literally 1 hour later my stomach started to gurgle and I had diarrhea the rest on the afternoon. I thought it was a little pricey. There are great places in Brea and Yorba Linda that are priced comparatively and are much tastier and not dry. Too bad. There isn't many good eats in DB.

The food at this establishment was very pleasing. I enjoyed the sashimi immensely. I also had the chicken teryaki. Prices were quite reasonable. I had the 2 piece combination. The tea is complimentary and available on request. Overall I recommend this restaurant to all who enjoy the exquisite cuisine of Japanese food, or should I say art because the food at this restaurant is presented in a way that is more similar to art than it is to your average grub.
